There are a great number of differences. Some small and some large but the most important one is that you have a set number of chips to start with (sometimes a tournament will have a set rebuy period but at some point that is cutoff). And that is it. You add to them by winning and chips are subtracted by losing. This Sounds simple, but the implications of this simple fact are enoromous and dictate the strategy of most play.

There are some books that you can read on this subject (David Sklansky"s is probably the best) as it would be too long to go into all the details on a forum. Mr. Caro or others can probably give you a better "snapshot " of the important differences than I can. But I would recommend reading about and then playing in tournaments to get the feel for and an idea of the differences and similarities to ring games.

think the biggest differences between tournaments and live games (besides the fact that if you run out of chips, you are done) is how respective stack sizes dictate your play as the levels go up.

I find I enjoy tournaments more than live games. I enjoy playing ring games, but tournaments are always more fun for some reason.

I think it's the competition aspect of it.

I agree with the other poster who suggested Sklansky's tournament book. Cloutier's book and Ciaffone's books are also great for tournaments.

Tournaments are also great for beginning players as you cannot lose too much while you are learning. When people ask me which game they should play as a beginner, I always recommend the low limit tournaments at Canterbury Park. They are fun and the most you can be out is $35 or $40.

Nice forum!
