I have read Mike Petriv’s book and I understand the odds as they apply to making a hand with certain numbers of outs etc.

But many books and every television programs on poker look at two starting cards and then conclude: “He is a 3 to 1 favorite over his opponent” and then change these odds depending on the flop and other cards. I have read nothing about how to calculate those odds. How is it done and where can I read more?
