No not that first time!

So i played my first public poker yesterday. I learned several things. First, I need to have predetermined starting standards. I learned figuring out pot odds isn't as easy without the computer counting how big the pot is for you. Also I need to be able to calculate the odds of making my hand easier.

For those of you who keep records of how much you win/lose every hour. how do you do that? do you get up every hour and write down what you've won/lost, or do you just remember it. do you use a watch to keep track of the hours or do you go every couple of dealers. Or whatever else you do

You only need track the number hours you played and how much you won or lost for a given day (if you played in different games or limites, then keep a seperate record for these). Over time, your total wins divided by the total number of hours you played will give you your hourly rate.

don't get too hung up over records rite away. just do a time in and time out every day with a P/L. you need a lot of numbers for statistical signifigance so you could run a total by week and then month. the more numbers you have, the closer you will be to your actual hourly rate. good luck.

For keeping track of the pot, just count the bets being put in by the players, don't try and keep track in terms of dollar amount. When the turn comes, divide that number by 2 to adjust to the bigger sized bet and you'll always have a good idea what your current pot odds are. It also helps to keep your attention focused if you do this. While counting each bet make a mental note of what each player is doing on each round and it's easier to put them on hands. I try to do it even when I'm not in the hand just to keep in practice with it.

I just keep track of hours played and $ won/loss and enter it into a speadsheet.

Hi guys, thanks for your responses. I have two things, first i was wondering if anybody calculates their standard deviation and/or if anybody has any thoughts on its importance(i've read about it in one of kriegers books).
Secondly i read the planet poker scam thread and was like "not that upset just gotta live with those types of posts" but then i read the responses to this thread and i felt kind of disrespected. Its somewhat upsetting to me that someone would post gossip in the thread i started........ Annnnnndd i'm over it.

you're right about how hard it is to count for pot odds when you usually have a computer doing it...

but as you become more dependant on the tactic, and as you do it on the computer, so I think you'll find like I do it becomes easier to do on a live table as you realize how much you use it in your regular game

Congratulations!!

I remember my first outing. It was Easter Sunday, 2000, about a week after Canterbury Park first opened. Sunday at noon and the place was absolutely jammed with most players still playing from Saturday afternoon.

Armed with only what I picked up reading Lee Jones, I sat down at a 2/4 table seemingly filled with kids who had been playing all night. The dealer asked me "Do you want to post?"

I had no idea what he meant, but something told me whatever posting was, I would have to do it to get into the game. I nodded and was instructed to put two chips in front of me and away we went.

My first official action as a poker player was to not know action was on me and check my option to raise as action flew by me with me still not knowing what was going on.

I tried to use Jones' starting hands and advice and did ok. My opponenst were so bad, it wasn't even funny.

That first time, I posted a $253 dollar win - all stacked in neat little piles of 10 chips each. I loved poker!

Here's how I count the pot as the hand proceeds. -

Preflop, you have 3 players and the blinds in for two bets? - that's 10 small bets preflop (5 x2). 2 players, small blind mucks and the big blind in? - 3.5 small bets preflop.

Preflop, just count the # of players in for how many bets. The blinds are often in so you don't have to account for them too often.

On the flop, people like to raise, so I count the bets as a running total as they go in. 10 bets preflop with a bet, raise, and call on the flop? That's 14 small bets total.

On the turn, the bets double so cut the total in half. 14 small bets is 7 big bets. Now count the bets on the turn and river as they go in and you have the exact pot odds any time in the hand.

Start trying this when you are not in the hand. Often you can check your total against the dealer's.

Pretty soon it becomes automatic and in those wild games, you can tell the guy who just rivered your KK with a garbage two pair "That's 18.5 big bets you just won, sir"

It's much easier to do than to explain.

Forget about the cash amounts, just count the bets. You can practice online by turning off the "Show pot amount" indicator.

I don't keep records so I can't help ya there. When I did keep records, I simply recorded the game, result and # of hours played on an Excel spreadsheet.

Good luck!
