Debunking the online poker myth, Daniel Matthew, 15. Jan 2003 11:13

Hi i am a 21yr old college student that has been earning food rent, and car payment money the last year playing online poker. I have read through this forum and I think a lot of people are very confused or doubtful of the legitamacy of online poker. I think people lose in online poker for many reasons. Here are some thoughts on what those are and how to prevent them

1) I think people have a tendency to play their own hand rather than the man. In other words keep records of EVERY person that you play with. For example you have AA and board goes K 4 5 10 K Rainbow. If you have a book of how people play you can get a much better idea of what the player you are up against in late play has. If they are a 'maniac' you might put them on 10s or worse even though they are raising you like a maniac. Whereas if you know that they are a tight but agressive player you will probobly know for sure that they have K's when they raise you on the river.

2)Tilt - I have seen it many times, an average to slightly above average player plays AA only to be beat by a n00b playing 37o who catches a straight then goes on a tirade on the message board about how lucky the n00b was and on and on...Meanwhile the next ten hands are played just as badly by the average player as the recover their composure after the bad beat. THE MOST IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTE YOU CAN HAVE IN ONLINE POKER IS PATIENCE. You WILL lose to maniacs playing trash because there are a lot of beginners playing online poker who will play and bet anything. Odds are eventually they will catch a run of those hands and drive you crazy. In the long run though if you are patient enough their bad play will catch up to them and it will even out in the end.

3)Realize that online poker is not going to make you rich. To me i think playing 2/4 3/6 online the potential is out there to make between 5-10$ an hour. I think many people chase hands they shouldnt because online poker can be boring without the personal interaction of an actual casino. YOU HAVE TO FOCUS IN ONLINE POKER BECAUSE OF THE MUNDANENESS OF IT. You must have the discipline to wait on hands that are capable of dragging the pot on wild 10 player ring games.

4)"The Cards Are Rigged" Theory
I will say that it is easy to wonder whether or not you are getting a fair deal online. I win about 70-75% of my sessions online and I have observed this. Having top pair or even two pair beat online is LIKELY. Here is why. Lots of people see the flop (more than at a casino most times)which automatically increases the chances that someone will catch a monster hand. I have watched countless hours of poker and have caught and been caught by monster hands. I think that this happens with about the same regularity according to my records (I have played about 100000 hands online). My advice is to take those bad beats in stride and know that if you weather the storm your cards WILL come around.

Anyway those are a few thoughts that I have had, please feel free to comment

Dan

First of all I said 100000 hands not hours. Secondly most of my winnings go towards $1000 month in living expenses. I play at Party Poker mainly although I have played some at Paradise. Generally I wait till my account gets to $1000 and then withdraw about $500. I dont play high limits, like i said in my post mainly 2/4 3/6 with a little 5/10 thrown in there.

You seem pretty sharp for your age. I'm not looking forward to running into you at a poker table 10 years from now. I'll add one more reason...

Distraction- I notice when I've played online, I get distracted. I read e-mails, I send e-mails, I read forums like this, I take business calls, I do office paper work, I try to hold conversations with the wife and/or kids.

In other words, I'm not giving the game the attention I should. Players enter and leave games online games in a much quicker manner than in real rooms. Sometimes I'm in the middle of a hand before I even notice that the 2 seat is NOT the same player I thought at the beginning of a hand! All of this of course, has an effect on how well you will ultimately perform in the long run.

I have been playing on Planet Poker for over 5 years now almost from the start of online poker and can tell you this, I have alot of respect for the guys/gals running this site and IMHO we who are playing there are getting the very best experience of all the sites. I have used them all and really never felt the flops were randomized though I don't have any computerized data to back my conclusion only my personal instincts. Good job Planet poker keep up the good work.
