| How much value do a pair of aces lose in large multiway or"family" pots? Also wouldnt Aces or large pocket pairs lose value even short handed if several people are seeing the showdown? When is the optimum time to play large pocket pairs and when is the optimum time to play medium rang suited connectors or say AK suited? TY JOE | ||

| I posted this below in another thread. The ideal situation for AA is a family pot with the pre-flop betting capped. There is no other scenario in which you will win more money (not the most pots). If you haven't seen this website, I think it will interest you. http://gocee.com/poker/HE_Val_Sort.htm | ||

| How can this be right? If all that money is in there. And with all that raising? People are going to be gettiing the right odds to see the river. Some one will draw out on you!! Are you certain they make the most money in a pot that is capped and every one sees the river? Please explain this to me! JOE | ||

| In a 10 handed Hold’em game AA will win about 30% of the time if nobody ever folds. That means that AA is around about a 2.3:1 underdog to win against 9 chasers who have random hands. I am becoming excited just at the thought of 9 other players capping the betting pre-flop when I hold AA. Short of players just giving you their chips this is the best pre-flop situation that you can hope for in limit Hold’em; 9:1 immediate odds, 1:2.3 chance of winning. Snorbolus on 16. | If you win 30% of the time (simulation results), you will be showing HUGE profits in a capped family pot. With nine opponents putting in 5 small bets pre-flop and 2.5 bets post flop, there will be a total of 45 big bets being put into the pot by your opponents while you only put in 5 big bets. If you play ten hands, you will win those 45 big bets 3 out of 10 times (on average) for a profit of 145 big bets on those hands. In the 7 hands you lose, you will lose 35 big bets (7*5). You net profit is +110 big bets (145-35). Of course, the math in the above post is enormously simplified. The point of it was not to demonstrate actual EV. But, the final result of +110 big bets is a clear demonstration of how much money you're making with AA in the capped family pot scenario. | ||

| Can you give me a scenario in which you think AA will win more money than in a capped family pot? Do you think you will win more money in the long run playing AA against 3 opponents for 3 bets each? How are you going to make up those 22.5 big bets your opponents are putting into the pot pre-flop in a capped family pot? | ||
