AKo against a limp-raise, HUSTLER81, 11. Jan 2003 03:32

I'm still fairly new to casino poker so this might be an easy question.
It's $5-10 limit holdem and there are 3 limpers ahead of me. I raise with AKo in late position. The blinds fold and the first limper, a little old lady, makes it 3 bets. The other two fold.
I called to see the flop but would folding have been the better move? I need a miracle flop to make any money. Even if I hit two-pair I figure to be up against a set.
If I'm up against AA or KK, which are the most common limp raising hands...for a tight old lady anyway, I can't see that calling here was the correct play.

There's enough in the pot to call and see if you flop a gut shot, or three suited cards to your nut or second nut draw. You may also flop two aces or two kings which you then know is the best hand. There is also some small chance she didn't backraise with AA or KK. It depends on how creative she plays, but something like JTs is not impossible here. You have good reason to be wary, but you still have position to make money if you end up with the nuts. I would call the reraise at this point.

I think folding pre-flop at this point is very weak at a low-limit ring game. I've yet to see anyone fold in this situation where I play. Your table image would take a huge hit, and savvy players will start reraising you with anything decent.

I know some players (who think they're really clever) limp-reraise with anything playable just to cast confusion over the oppostion. I was recently limp-reraise by pocket 77s when I was in your exact situation. There's just no telling.

There's enough money in the pot to call the last $5 and see how the flop treats you. You've got position, so you won't have to check into her on the flop. If the flop misses you completely and she bets out, go ahead and fold, but if you catch a king or ace I might go for a raise to see what happens. The raise buys you information, if not the pot.

Until you understand her play a little more completely you're at a disadvantage. If she's truly a nuts-only raiser and you know it for sure, then a fold is probably correct. Even so, I would cosider the impact folding this easily has on your image because it invites future bluff raises.

I dont see how this logic works ! do the math on a pocket pair hitting a set on the flop you will be losing a lot of money if you are constantly too scared ( though not wary ) of big hands hitting.

Re-raise on the flop and then come out firing after it ! see how that play works ( then maybe slow down ! )
