My biggest weakness is not letting go of hands that start out as monsters, become bigger monsters on the flop, only to be run down by an even bigger monster on the turn or river (example: holding AA in MP, four-betting the flop against a maniac, flopping a set, but only to lose when the maniac, holding 57o, gets his gutshot on the river for a straight).

Any good text out there on letting go of monster hands, and signs that a bigger monster has arrived? Any good text on how to combat the urge to jump through your screen and pummel the maniac?

I don't think I have tilt problems -- I've had experiences in BJ when the dealer, showing a 6, hits 4 times to get 21 to beat my pat 20 and I've gotten steamed, but that didn't mean I deviated from basic strategy thereafter. I know poker is different regarding your first two cards, but while I might be ticked, I'm pretty confident it rarely clouds my judgment.

Thanks in advance

Not too sure if this helps or not, but you just have to watch the type of hands the maniacs play and try to figure out where you are on the flop (flush draw, straight draw, etc). I know it's hard to throw AA or KK away, especially when you trip up, but you've got to think your set can be beat if your opponent keeps coming back at you. I've not read any books that went into any detail on this, more of the "know the game, know your opponents" stuff.

I play in a lot of lower limit games (3/6 -10/20) and I've personally played in a lot of games where the type hand you decribe happens. It's hard to put someone on something crazy like 5-7 offsuit when the flop is capped. It is frustrating when a hand like you mentioned beats your trip aces and it's easy to get upset. If this happens to me and I get mad, I just get up and walk around for a min or two to cool off. My experience in games like this are that maniacs will always call a raise when they have money in the pot. In other words, if he opens pre-flop and then has to cold-call 3 bets when it gets back to him....they'll usually call most of the time. Same thing when they have a 4-flush or 4-straight draw.

All this being said, you do want to play against people like this because they'll miss hands like you mentioned a lot more than they'll make them. Although it may cost me a little bit of money (winnings) in the long run, I found that I make out a little better by not being quite as aggressive in these type games because it's very hard to bet someone out of a pot.......calling a little more than raising....opting to win a little less than lose more. Hope some of this helps.

I'm certainly no expert on this, but my (limited) experience is that I know when my monster is beat, especially if I've been playing aggressively. I was recently playing 3-6 HE, was dealt AA on the button, and flopped trips. Everyone checked to me on the flop and turn, but then on the river (when the third spade hit the board) I was bet into. So I knew I was beat. I think you have to not necessarily think about your hand as a "monster." A hand is a hand, so if you think you're beat, you need to make the correct play regardless of the absolute value of your hand. Once you get down to heads up everything is relative.

For what it's worth, I still called the bet and, of course, lost to the flush.

Hi Pat

Calling down is a funtionof what price the pot is laying you and the chance that your hand is goo. If you can only beat a bluff try to assess the chance that your opponent is bluffing. If you think there is a 10% chance that your opponet is bluff ing and the pot is laying you 8-1 you should fold. If the pot is laying you 15-1 then you should call. Don't marry a hand and pay off just becuase you are involved too ddep. That is a poor way top think and will cost you many bets over the long haul.

The problem with these real loose games is that the maniacs are often getting the correct odds to draw at their gutshots, but you holding a set are still a big favorite too win. You have to checkraise and do whatever you can to reduce the number of opponents that you are up against. The looser the game the bigger the swings. If you play in a real loose game, you will need a bigger bankroll and more patience, because you will definately be drawn out on more than in a typical game. A few weeks ago, in a 20-40 holdem game in St.Louis, I raised with pocket kings from middle position, and the guy right behind me 3bet it, I capped it and 3 of us took the flop of 2c2s9h. To make a long story short the guy right behind me who had 3 bet preflop won the pot with Ks2d offsuit. He robbed me again a little later on with a deuce trey offsuit, I had aces. He laughed and rubbed it in every time he would beat you. His chips went up and down like a roller coaster and he finally went broke. I love these kind of players, and they are part of the reason why good poker players will always have a job. It isn't so much how good you play, but how bad the suckers play.
