| 20/40 hold'em, I open-raise from middle position with AJo. I get 3-bet immediately by a fairly aggressive player. Everybody folds, I call. Flop comes A83 with 2 hearts. I check-call the flop. Turn brings a 6. I check-call the turn. I am hoping for a semi scare card to hit so I can value bet the river with out getting raised although I plan on betting the river no matter what card hits. River pairs the 3, and I bet. What ya think of my play? How would you have played it? | ||

| The toughest decision in this hand and similar ones is whether or not to bet the river. Otherwise, it's played perfectly. | ||

| With regards to the river bet: This is very much an "it depends" situation. Against better players you have to step up your thinking. At the very least, you have to consider what your opponent thinks you have. It's unlikely that the 3 helped either of you. I can tell that there's a very good chance that I (and many other players) would have raised you with an AK, AQ and obviously some better hands. So if you're gonna call every time and you're against a player who is capable of laying down a worse hand, then you're probably better off checking it and hope to pick up a bet if he decides to bluff at it. The other thing, is that if you fold too often after getting raised, and an astute player notices this, now you're liable to get bluff raised by a busted draw. So it very much depends. IMO- | ||

| Well, as with a lot of aggressive players, he loves to make the 3-bet isolation move with all most all pairs. He would also do it with AK/AQ in this situation. So there are 23 hands I lose to (AA/AK/AQ/88/66) and 36 hands I beat (KK/QQ/JJ/TT/99/77). I think this player would bet the turn with all of the above hands, but I think he will only bet the river with hands that beat me, but I think he would pay off with any of them. So from this standpoint, betting the river is a must. The only problem is if you get raised, which I would pay off in this situation. But even if he raises everytime he has you beat, if you calculate the numbers you are still better off betting. Against a tighter player who would not isolate with out a much better hand than shown above, or against a much looser player that would stupidly bluff away on the end, then checking the river might be a better play. Although it still might be right to bet against the tight player. As sklansky points out in many of his articles, even if the chances are more than 50% that your beaten on the end, if the guy will call with more hands than he will bet then betting may still be the right move. But then, if your against a guy like that then maybe check-folding is the best move. | ||
