I'm new to on-line poker, but have probably logged several hundred hours in the past two months (the holidays contributed a lot of time). Despite the time spent (invested?), I do not feel I have learned a thing. I have concentrated on holdem and 7 stud, with a little omaha hi-lo, stud hi-lo, and 5 stud. I spent most time on $1-$2, some higher stakes, some (more) lower, a tiny amount of no limit--never over $4-$8.

I have lost about $2/hr. I feel confident I can do better and win at these games. I believe I play the button fairly well, but lousy on the later cards. I have tried tight and loose, and tried to plug my botton leaks (playing A rag).

I have played at Planet Poker and Paradise Poker.

Does anyone have any suggestions for ways to improve my play after the button (books, articles, etc.) Suggestions as to which games and stakes to concentrate on? I would be satisfied consistently winning only a few dollars an hour.

I used to play the $1-$2 7 stud tables in Vegas on vacation in the 80s and found I could make maybe $3 to $4 an hour (that's why I did not move there). I would also be willing to move to a higher stake to avoid the no fold-em problem. However, until I improve my late card play, I do not believe I would have a chance of success.

I still have not been able to completely grasp pot odds at split pot games, and struggle short handed. I should be more selective about the tables I play and sometimes recognize that I am one of the weaker players at the table. However, I do not always have the luxury of picking the optimum times to play.

Any help?

write down some hand histories or get them from your sight. revisit the session and find out where improvement can be made. this will encourage disipline. you need to (re)read some books on various types of poker to get an idea about proper play. I would suggest playing rather good to excellent cards 95% of the time, dont bluff and semi bluff sparingly / early.draw mostly to the nuts and seldom to the ignorant end.Stick to one (maybe two) distinct games. (I suggest one)

Hi,
You should be able to beat the low limit ($3/6 and lower) Stud games with a little discipline, some game selection and some observation of your opponents. The games I've found on Party and, at times, Poker Stars have been very beatable much of the time. It seems from your post that you are primarily interested in Hold Em, but if you'd like some specific help with Stud, please email me and I'll be happy to assist you.

Lee Jones' "Winning Low Limit Hold'em"

It certainly helped me.

You need to focus your efforts. Be like Willie Sutton and "go where the money is" which is holdem. If you travel and play on vacation, holdem is universally available, whereas low limit stud is not. The ten handed game and volume pots cards helps to overcome the rake.

I played my first year of online in 2 4 holdem at Planet, and did quite well. Playing the same site and limit has the advantage of getting to know the players, which can add to your win over time. You also make cyber buddies along the way.

Probably 40% of the starting hands you are playing are "break even" minus the rake. That is where your $2 and hour is going. Two gapper hands like K 10 and A J aren't called trouble hands for nothing. Concentrate on folding those hands and using the money to raise with your premium hands.

Keep working at it and you'll have an enjoyable pastime that hustles your luch money.

-- Focus on just one game and learn it well. Don't hop around playing stud, split pot, etc. It takes a long time to learn all the nuances and develop your playing sense.

-- You must master pot odds. It's not really that difficult, since they usually lead to some simple rules of thumb. You must learn them, especially to win at low limits. Always count your outs and don't call when it's not justified. This alone will vastly improve your play after the first betting rounds. Many low-limit players lose because they don't understand this.

-- Play really, really tight. Yes, even more tight than you think. Low-limit online poker can be exceedingly dull. Many more low-limit players lose because they don't understand this.

-- Read as much as you can, and think critically about what you read. I like Lee Jones' book for beginners a lot.

-- I find that the single table tourneys are a great way to learn. Just playing properly tight will get you close to the money, and then you'll get some great experience learning to play aggressively at a short-handed table. They are also a little more exciting than the endless grind at low-limit ring games. Your mileage may vary.

These points are what have improved my still-young game the most lately. Good luck!

Stick to one game and don't play any others until you start winning in that game. As others suggested, probably hold'em is a good start, being the most widely available. You don't have to memorize discards like stud and the starting hand requirements for tight play aren't too difficult to learn. Since it's a game of domination, stay away from dominated hands like KJo, QJo, ATo and such. And get to know what kind of pot odds you need for all the most common drawing situations (open ened str8, flush draw, filling up, etc). Get whatever books you can on the subject. I like the Sklanksy Hold 'em book for beginners and the HE for Adv players as you get the hang of it.
