| I wouldn't be concerned at all about explaining to your doctor how poker isn't gambling. I'd focus completely on explaining the symptoms of your anxiety problem and having an open discussion about treatment. Poker IS gambling after all It is also a game of skill. I wish you well. | Only too often people liken poker to roulette and not to darts. It is a game of skill where a slight breeze can make the difference between a big win and a big loss. People who will tell you, "quit while you're ahead," instead of, "quit when the fish goes home," are the people who will be unable to listen to your problems because they think that you should first take care of your "gambling problem". I'm still constantly told that, "In the end *THEY* will get it all," even though I post (very recreational) profits of a few thousand dollars a year. I can understand how a doctor wouldn't take your anxiety seriously if he thinks that you are a 'gambler' and not a positive player. | ||

| I'm a psychologist whose worked with several athletes with anxiety issues, and I think it's the same things with poker players. You can get meds from your doctor to control the symptoms, but your best bet involves trying to figure out what the exact "triggers" are for your anxiety issues (i.e, fear of failure, fear of losing money, etc.), and then get some help on working on them accordingly. Good luck. | ||

| "Poker isn't gambling" The funny thing is in this world there are many people who don't understand certain things. It is very hard to try to explain to a person how you can make money at poker, and how you can exploit certain edges. It's just no use at all to try and explain to them what you think of poker or how the game of poker is especially if they don't have an open mind. Think about how many people you see each week playing blackjack, roulette, craps, with no concept at all that the odds are against them, they just don't know any better, now try explaining poker to them and they'll just ignore you..... | ||

| poker can be considered gambling. Even if your a winner poker player. You still can experience the highs and lows associated with any form of gampling. For that matter everything is a gamble. But poker can be considered more of one then alot of other things in life, even if your a pro with 9 WSOP bracelets. Gambling is an obsessive compulsive behavior. So of course there can be issues of anxiety present while playing poker. If you have a losing session you this can create a great deal of worrying in your mind as to what u may have done wrong, voila anxiety. If you lose to much money and are afraid you can't pay rent. Thats gonna creat a whole bunch of anxiety. | ||

| Poker is gambling like playing the stock market is gambling. There are risks, wins, and losses. A winning poker player is like a smart investor. A poor investor is as much of a degenerate as a poor poker player. Just that the investors tend to have a better image and the bad beats are less obvious in the stock market. | ||
