Stud/8, one low vs two highs, Stuart (RandomStu), 2. Jan 2003 10:23

In a Planet Poker 8-16 Stud Hi-lo game (7 players, $1 ante), I bring
it in for $4 with (2d3d)7s. There are no other low cards showing. A
king completes the bet, and a jack calls the $8. What should I do when it gets back to me?

I raised, thinking that being a low against two highs is a good
situation for me. On 4th street, I catch a 5. When it's checked to me,
I bet for the same reason. The king (who had a split pair) raised,
apparently to chase out the jack & "assure" himself of the high half
at least. The jack (who had pocket aces) called, allowing me to
re-raise.

Turns out that I made my low. The size of the pot by 5th street kept
both the highs calling. And I backed into a flush too, so there's joy
in Mudville. But leaving results aside, was I right, wrong, or
marginal in pushing a low draw so strongly when I find myself against two highs?

I don't play a lot of stud/8 but I will give this a quick stab. If it is an open hi/lo than it was fine. If this hi/lo has an 8 qualifier than I don't like your play. Starters that include an Ace that can play both ways, three low to the straight or flush, will help you more in the long run. You were beefing up a pot that you may not even get to call with. In stud/8, a pair will always hold it's value, a 3-4 card low may never attain it. - Nathaniel Brous
