Stud drawing hands & Fourth/FifthStreet raises, Paul K., 31. Dec 2002 22:17 | ||

| Hi, I consider myself a solid low-limit stud player, but one particular hand that comes up always seems to perplex me - when you have a four-flush. Of course, I'll probably stay in with this until the end, as I'm 1.25 to 1 to complete it by the river; the exceptions would be if I saw many of my needed suit gone or felt I were drawing dead against a made boat on fifth or sixth streets. My question is this: when do you raise with your four-flush on fourth street, as opposed to call? I'm less apt to raise with a four-straight, but would consider it with a flush. Also, the odds fall if you don't have a flush on fifth street - so is raising on the come here a good idea? Or should one generally just raise on fourth? A raise on fifth could buy me a free card on sixth, which would be a good payoff if I make my hand...The majority of the time I'm calling, and waiting to complete before I bang away. Happy new year, Paul | ||

| I raise or reraise occasionally with a Flush on Fourth Street in a couple of circumstances. I've done it for deception and for value. Here are two examples. The most common instance comes up when the pot is heads up, I have a high card or two showing, my opponent is relatively good and can be deceived by my action.(as opposed to clueless) and I have a tight image. I want to represent a high pair, either trying to win the pot right there on Fourth Street or getting my opponent to call me if I make the Flush on a later street. I am selective about this and do NOT do it routinely. (By the way, I would usually bet Fifth Street as well even if I didn't catch.) I also might raise or reraise with a Four Flush on Fourth Street in a multi-player pot for value if I were pretty certain that I would be called by at least a couple of players. This makes sense for me if I have an image as someone who tries to steal or is otherwise overly aggressive, if I am against bad players who don't really pay attention to betting action, or if I believe my opponents will for some reason not give me credit and will call me if I make my Flush on a later street. I would be more likely to do this if I were not likely to be the high hand on Fifth Street so I could get a free card on Fifth Street (or Sixth Street) if I didn't connect. Ashley Adams 31. | 1:1.25 to complete by the river that means the pot must lay you 1.25 times what you will have to put in to make it a worth while deal if t your cartds are totally live. so if you think that many will call a bet on fourth you should bet / raise to get the overlay that you will need to carry you over should some opponents fall away on fourth or fifth and you get heads up or involved with raisers and reraisers. To get the proper pot/implied odds to make the calls and bets before you make your flush correct a raise may be required and should be made if you think many will call here but not on the later streets when the betting doubles. This pot building gives a secondary benifit when drawing hands that cant beat you when you flush up take the odds and play. In a tighter game where there may be some aggreessive betting you need high cards to give you the extra winning outs to improve to somthing other than the flush. this actually improves your odds of winning a pot of a size large enough to make it correct to play the hand at all. on 31. | Thanks...I'll keep this in mind during my next session. Don't want to always be a "calling station" with this one, thats for sure. Paul | ||
