I've noticed since the movie Rounders was released that a large number of 21-30 yr olds has gotten into low limit holdem in the last several years after seeing the movie. I've started noticing that if a younger player mentions the movie at the table or quotes lines from the movie that I can expect them to slow play just about every hand that amounts to anything at all. It seems to be an advantage because most of the advice from the movie applies to no limit and/or short handed play. Am I crazy or have other people noticed this pattern?

I've seen it even in middle limit hold'em, particularly they seem fond of slow playing pocket aces.

What a mistake slowplaying Aces is. Here is an example which I got a REAL BIG KICK OUT OF.

I was dealt 9 3 offsuit in the bigblind. Two players called and so did the small blind. I checked (of course). The flop came 9-2-7 rainbow. Small blind checked; I checked; Next player bet and everyone else folded except for me. The turn brought a 3. I checked raised the guy and he came back over top of me so I just called him thinking he had a set. The river was a blank and I checked and called. He turned over pocket Aces and was livid when I turned over my 9 3 offsuit. He mumbled something to the guy next to him and then yelled down the table to me, "You didn't put me on pocket Aces did you?" Of course I didn't because he misplayed the hand so bad. You've got to protect those Aces BEFORE the flop. After all, we are all not as lucky as Teddy KGB.

Slowplaying AA underrated..., Charles Kincy, 31. Dec 2002 00:39

Slowplaying aces before the pot is NOT NECESSARILY a mistake. Aces cannot lose pot equity before the flop.

However, I think one should generally raise with them, because I like playing by the principle of putting the money in the flop when I have the best of it. When I hold AA, I know I have the best of it.
