George Epstien's article in cardplayer, Steve Martino, 27. Dec 2002 22:29

The article was about a 7 card stud hand in which the dealer gave a player too many cards. The player was the one who noticed it and pointed it out . He was the last to recive a card on 6th street and had an extra one to the right of the other cards. 3 other players in the hand were all-in and the dealer finished dealing the river cards before addressing the problem. The player with the extra card had made a flush ,which was the best hand. The floorman was called and the hand was ruled dead. A player with kings up won the pot.
To finally get to my point, A player lost a hand which he should have won because of the dealers error. The floorman went by the book . The floorman is an idiot. The dealer could've shown the players a rule book that states "you can't have 8 cards in 7 card stud". The reason the floorman was called is because this is a situation where good jugment was necassary, and not used. I am a manager at a business, and when one of our employees makes an error that cost a customer money ,we fix the stiuation immediately. It has been my experience that every business operates this way(except for poker room's). The floorman should've paid both players the amount that was in the pot to cover their own mistake. Steve

Agreed. The ideal ruling would be, "The hand is dead. The Kings Up wins; the House will compensate the 8 card hand for our mistake in dealing you an extra card which caused what may have been the winning hand to be ruled dead."

This would be a great idea, but I can't see the house doing this. It might work in a small game, but what about a $300/600 game where the house has to award someone $6000 or $7000? Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the player to protect his hand, including when the dealer is trying to give him an 8th card.

Here's a problem that pertains to all players - when the pot is short because a dealer didn't collect everyone's antes. I would like the house to put the extra ante in the pot when the dealer missed collecting them all. It is their duty to make sure the pot is right, especially before the hand is dealt.

Perhaps the house should charge the dealers for their mistake. They could be given one warning, with the house paying the first time, and then make the dealers pay from thereon. This would certainly make the dealers pay more attention to what they are doing.
