low vs. middle limit, Cohiba, 23. Dec 2002 14:05 | ||

| I'm a new poster. I'm a low limit player who is almost finished reading Ciaffoone and Briers middle limit hold'em book. I never realized the great difference in strategy between low and middle limits. It seems that playing the strategy contained in the book would be suicidal in low limit games because of the hoards of fishermen who can't fold. Do any experienced players disagree thats theres a significant difference in strategies at the two levels? Thanks | ||

| I've played in lots of games as high as 30-60 where the players were no better than the ones in 3-6 and pretty much played the same way, or even worse. I've also played in tough 3-6 and 4-8 games where you could make moves. A lot depends on the area of the country and the range of limits available. Lin | ||

| I've found that, in general, the higher stakes games have better players. This is not universally true; much depends on the place, the time of day and day of the week. In Stud, at least, the general style that gets the money in the lower (below 10/20 usually) stakes games is a trapping style where you wait for excellent hands, play them strongly, and get bad players to call along with inferior hands. In middle and higher limit games there are additional moves which can be used. Also, the ante and bring in are usually too high for this squeaky tight style to be effective. Ashley Adams on 23. | I would have to agree with Ashley that the higher limit games, as a whole, generally do have better players playing in them. As I'm sure you've read in any poker articles you've read, any and everything does "depend" on the time/place/game/etc...but better players generally play higher limits. One thing to think about is that people who play for a living (or pros) generally play at least at the 10/20 or 15/30 level and above.....so we'll have to assume they know what they're doing to play for a living. I'm generally a 3/6 to 5/10 player and have found when playing higher limits that the games are a little different. When in Vegas, I've played several times in the 9/18 game at Bellagio and found that to not be too different from the lower limit games. However, on a recent trip I played 10-20 at the Mirage and found that to be a lot different. I saw a little bit loser starting-hand selection in this game (which seemed to be filled with all locals except me). I have also played in a 15/30 game where I thought I would get killed, but found myself to pretty much be in control of the table and made a decent profit. Played in the same game to following day and was outmatched by almost everyone on the table. Sometimes the higher limit games will have people with bigger wallets, but not necessarily better poker skills. I haven't played anything higher than 15/30 to give any feedback, but I would say that hand-reading skills greatly go up in value the higher the limit you play. I've read that as a rule-of-thumb, you really shouldn't try to move up in limits until you are a consistent winner at the level you are currently playing. I am still working on that at the 3/6, 5/10, 6/12 level and will try to move up to 10/20 once I can consistently beat those games on a regular basis. Again, the two biggest differences I've personally seen when I've played in mid-limit games were a looser starting-hand selection (meaning not totally by the book, as you'll find more of in lower games)and better hand-reading skills by the other players........and I think these two things somewhat go hand-in-hand. | ||
