| I posted this question on the 2+2 forum and received no responses. I feel that it is legitimate so here it is again: In the chapter entitled "Playing Pairs in the Hole" S&M state that if an overcard comes on the flop, especially and A or K, you should fold your lower pair. Later they go on to say the JJ or lower need to be bet to be protected. This seems very contradictory. In my opinion, if you are in a loose game with people playing any Ace, you may have a clear fold. If no one bets and it comes to you, you should bet to see where you are and "purify the flop." I am interested in your thoughts. | ||

| There is no contradiction. What they are saying is that if you have JJ, TT, or smaller AND YOU ARE FIRST TO ACT OR YOU ARE CHECKED TO, then it is important to protect your hand with a bet. For example, suppose you raise under the gun with TT and get two callers. The flop comes J-7-2. If you are first to act or you are checked to, then you must bet because if it is checked around you are very vulnerable if a J, K, or an A comes. On the other hand, suppose you raise under-the-gun with TT and get several callers including the blinds. Assume the blinds are "typical" players. Now the flop comes A-7-2. One of the blinds comes out betting. What should you do? You should fold because you are most likely playing two outs. The bettor figures to have a top pair of aces especially given your strength-showing preflop raise from early position. You also have other players yet to act. | ||

| "you are vulnerable if a J, K, or A comes" should read "a Q,K, or A comes". | ||

| Jim, After re-reading the section in the book and your explanation, you are correct. I';ve read the book many times, but for some reason was confused. Thanks for your respone. By the way, our book with Bob Ciaffone, MLHE is a classic. It is just and outstanding book and is a key to the improvement in my game. I am interested in a sequel or stud book using the same format. Any plans? | ||

| Thanks for the kind words. No, we have no plans for a sequel but I think the coach may be planning to write a book using a similar format but it would on Pot Limit Hold'em. | ||

Jim is right that folding is the favorite play here. However, it is not the only correct play. If one of the blinds is capable of betting a hand like 87s, you should semi-bluff raise to isolate the bettor. Admittedly, a typical player will not do this. ;) But it illustrates that you should generally raise-or-fold your underpair when bet into. | ||
