I need advice on a home game, TOM WAGGONER, 20. Dec 2002 13:58

I have a question about a home holdem game that I play in, that I was hoping to get some help with. First of all, I play a lot of 10-20 casino holdem, and regularly do well. I am having a problem beating this home game, and I think that it may have something to do with the structure. It is a 10 dollar limit holdem game, and that is for all four betting rounds, and there are a few other twists, the winner of each pot leaves up 10 dollars, to reseed the next pot, and he is the blind, only one blind, here is where it gets tricky, he also is given a winner button, and the preflop action starts to the left of him, and when it gets back to him he has an option, but after the flop the action starts to the left of the player dealing, and the deal is passed around in order. Each time it is your turn to deal, you have to put a dollar in a sack, for the high hand. The high hand is given away every two and a half hours. Alot of players pass the deal but they still have to put in the dollar. We usually play 11 to 12 handed. There are some extremely tight players in the game, and some loose cannons. I have seen players limping preflop with aces alot. I am confused and a bit lost, that seems to go against mostly what I know about holdem. My main question is would it be correct to take my drawing hands further since the bet does not double on the turn and river? I think I have the position thing down, it just changes from pre flop to postflop, but the betting is giving me a problem, i'm also finding it hard to make big pairs hold up. I would appreciate any advice, Thank you , Tom

Wow, I'm not surprised you're having problems in this broken game.

The fact that the betting limit doesn't increase on the turn and river obviously makes it correct to draw more often. No wonder big pairs aren't holding up.

What's really evil in my opinion is requiring the winner of the pot to post the next blind. This works against you in two ways:

1. It makes the strategy of extremely tight play correct because there's no penalty for sitting out an infinite number of hands.

2. An excellent player only profits a few big bets per hour. If you are subsequently charged a big bet every time you win a pot, that profit vanishes.

The high hand jackpot only increases the randomness of the game, thereby penalizing skilled players and rewarding lucky ones.

Hope you're having lots of fun in this game, because I don't expect you'll win any money.
