Stud- open pair on 4, 1/2 bet reasonings?, Nathaniel Brous, 19. Dec 2002 22:15

While observing 6-12 stud games and below, I have watched players routinely place a 1/2 bet with an open pair on fourth street. I believe that over the long run, this is a weak move. Could someone explain the logic behind this. Am I missing something? Thanks for any input.

More often than not, there won't be any "logic". Most low-limit stud players are creatures of habit who play a certain way in certain situations because they have somehow gotten the idea that this is how they should play. If you're looking for a thought process, you're usually wasting your time.

In a situation like this, it's more useful to observe your opponents tendencies (i.e. what they do) than try to figure out why they do it.

to trap weaker hands for a large bet or bets on the later rounds when they improve sightly or you improve greatly. rather than bet out and lose them and gain only a small pot. with a hand that could of won a much larger pot had the weaker hands stayed for a large bet. kind of like a semi slow play . Also can help to mix up your betting actions and still play with a maximized EV.

I think your question actually has a somewhat more complicated answer than what I've read so far.

For most games 6/12 and lower this IS a weak move. Bad players usually will call a $12 bet if they will call a $6 bet on fourth street. So if you're in the lead, make the most of it. There are exceptions, however.

If you pair your door card and it makes you trips and you're against a weak tight player you might want to bet the lower tier to lure him in for the half-size bet. This is especially true if you know him to be the type of player who will call to the River even when he is way behind -- once he is in on fourth street. These players do crop up in the lower limit games (and higher limit -- though not for long).

Similarly, it makes sense sometimes to bet the lower tier when you haven't made your trips and you suspect you are behind a larger pair. If you're against a very good player who will suspect you are trying to suck him with your lower tier bet, this move can sometimes succeed in getting your opponent to fold.

Betting the lower tier is sometimes useful if you haven't made trips if your opponent doesn't seem to have improved and you put him on something other than a pair to start with on Third Street. Your pair alone may get him to fold his three flush or three straight or high cards. You're only risking the lower tier bet to find out if your read is correct. If he calls and bets Fifth and you haven't improved you can fold. If he raises you on Fourth you can fold as well, having only ventured a half size bet for this gambit.

If you'd like to read more, I have an article on this very question on www. thepokerforum.com.
