| I'm young and somewhat new to poker but definetly new to some terms. I've read a few books, and some of the forums on this site and have run across the phrase pot odds. Can someone please explain this to me, and how to calculate it. Its difficult for me to learn these things from experience given that I'm only 16 and can't get into casinos or poker rooms. | ||

| Hi Cade, it's good for you to learn all you can BEFORE going into casinos. Pot odds are not too hard to figure, and remember, you don't have to be exact. What you do is, count (approx) all the money that's in the pot and compare that to the amount you must put into the pot to call a bet. For example, if there is about $30 in the pot, and you must put $5 into the pot in order to call a bet, that's 30 to five, which reduces to 6 to 1. In limit games, some players just count the number os people who have called, and multiply by the amount of the bet, etc.. I think that you will find that rather easy, but counting "implied odds" is a bit trickey. You may want to wait till you are more sure of your ability to count the pot odds. But to get the "implied odds" you add to the amount now in the pot the amount that you THINK will be in the pot at the end of the hand----sort of an educated guess of who will call, raise, or fold. Hope that helps, but let me knon if not --by posting here-- no Email please. | ||

| IT ISNT JUST HELPFUL!!! ITS VITAL!!! Lets say for an example that there is $36 in the pot and you have a gutshot draw (its a 3/6 game).. so you need 11 to 1 (approx.) to make calling for the gutshot a "good bet." Because you wont make the gutshot draw very often you want to make sure that when you get it that the pot is "worth" it. So in this example you can call $3 on the flop (because thats 12 to 1 pot odds) so its a "good bet" IF THE POT WAS ONLY $9... then calling a $3 bet would be a BAD BET because you are only getting 3 to 1 for a "long shot" | ||
