| I've just gotten laid off. My work history has been in sales but I don't really want to do that again. (Hate working for someone.) My dream would be to play poker professionally, but after reading some articles by Daniel Negreanu and Roy Cooke about becoming pro, it seems like the best path is to have a "secure" job, and supplement that with poker. Well, okay, if I have to be "real", then . . . . . . . . would being a poker prop make sense? Or, is it just a joke? I mean, is it just like being a pro since you're playing with your own money anyways? I know that you don't get to play any game you want and are told where/when to play by the house, but "at least" there's some security in a paycheck and benefits. I just really love to play and don't want to let go of that dream altogether. I was thinking that it's a good way to practice, win some pots, and still get a paycheck. I'd be very interested in hearing from those who have been or are poker props! Thanks, Jivamukti SF, CA | ||

| if you are not already a solid, winning player a prop job is not for you. Props are usually required to start games, and play short handed. They are also required to quit a full game for a waiting player. Vegas props are becoming scarce, and are paid slightly above minumum wage, barely covering tips and rake. Most of the have a retirement income, and work primarily for health insurance benefits. Less than 10% of them can actually win playing, given the above conditions. Huge B&M cardrooms pay in the $100/$200 a day range, but you must play higher limits (pay commensurate with limit). For that , u need to be a REAL SOLID player with a bankroll. Low limit internet props do not have benefits and experience Huge swings (300 big bets a week). The best way to get into the life is get a dealing job and play in your off time. | ||

| they say, and I think it may be true, that for a pro, it's a hard way to make an easy living. It may be a good think for you to try, but only if your record is that of a winner. And remember, you may have to play for higher stakes than your bankroll would reasonably allow. However, it's possible that some casinos may have special arrangements that would mean that you do not have to play at the higher limits. | ||
