| I am new to the site(1st post). I have a question about split pot games with a chip declare such as 7/27. For example Lets say Bob has 6 1/2 and declares low. Gene has 28 1/2 and declares high. Jimmy has A A 4 for 6 and 26 declaring both ways. My question is how to divide the pot. We play if a person declares both ways he has to win both ways or he forfeits any part of the pot. So Jimmy is eliminated. The dispute came up afterward. One school of thought is since Gene was beaten for the high pot Bob gets it all. The other school of thought was that Gene wins the high pot and Bob wins the low pot. What is the correct school of thought? Thanks | ||

| I'm not sure there's a standard rule, but the friendlier and safer rule is to split the pot. It's friendlier because it gives more people a chance to win, and in a recreational home game you're more likely to keep the game going if you spread the winners around. It's safer because otherwise a both-ways player who is in cahoots with the high-only player could declare both ways with a hand he knows is a losing high just to make sure his pal gets the entire pot. | In our game we use two coins. The options are 1. no coin - low hand 2. one coin - high hand 3. two coins - both high and low hand. To win both high and low hands, the player must either tie or win both hands. So in your example, the player who went high and low, won the high hand but lost the low hand. The player loses the pot. It is split between the other two players. tony | ||

| I love playing 7/27 (for the fun social aspect of the game). I agree with tonyk... we have always done the coin in the hand method. If you declare both you must tie or win outright. Good luck.... AA5 for you!!!!! | ||

| When I played these games back in the 1970s, we had a "no backing in" rule. It worked like this: Player A declares high, player B declares low, and Player C goes both ways. If Player A has the best high and Player C has the best low, then Player A gets the entire pot. Player B does not get to "back in" because Player A had the best high. Similarly, if Player B had the best low and Player C had the best high, then Player B wins the entire pot. I like rules where the chances of someone winning the whole pot is increased and where declaring both ways is encouraged. For split pot games with declaring I recommend the following: 1. Always declare with coins or chips. 2. Have a "no backing in" rule. 3. Allow straights and flushes to sweep (be both high and low) 4. Always play with a betting round after everyone declares. 5. If someone declares both ways, wins one way but ties another, then he gets three-fourths of the pot. If he declares both ways and is tied both ways, he gets one-half the pot. As an aside, I think the most skillful poker game is seven card stud high-low split declaring with coins, bet-declare-bet, no backing in, straights and flushes sweep, and if you declare both and win one way while tieing in the other way you get three-fourths. The reason you would never see this game in a casino is because there would be too much business going on. | ||
