i recently played an online holdem tournamnet where three sevens hit the flop and the fourth hit the turn. The two players in contiuned to bet and raise. Some of the table said there was no point as kicker doesnt count in four of a kind the rest said it did. Clarification on the rule would be helpful as when the pp rules were looked at the it was unclear.
By the way both players had Ace kicker.

The kicker may well be important depending upon what the other boardcard is. Anyone with an ace has the nuts. If an ace is the fifth boardcard then everyone still in the hand is playing the board. If the no one has an ace, then anyone with a king wins and so forth. If no one has a card higher than the fifth boardcard, then everyone who is in the hand is playing the board and they all split the pot.

The key is understanding that a poker hand consists of FIVE cards. When four of a kind is on the board, then the fith card becomes critically important.

If the board were to contain an ace-high straight with no flush possibility, then the nuts is on the table and everyone still in the hand gets to play the board and get a share of the pot.
