My first tournament -- a report, SoCalPat, 3. Dec 2002 15:22

Played over the weekend in a Vegas hold em tourney -- about 25 or so players. Kicked off with two tables of 11 (yes, 11), with a waiting list for others hoping for some early busting out. One rebuy ($20) with entry fee of $37. $800 given in chips, with $1,000 given in the rebuy. Rebuy can only occur in the first hour of the tournament. Top five spots pay.

My facts might have a hole or two in them, so forgive me in advance. Comments on my play more than welcome.

Having played the vast majority of my hold 'em online, my inexperience shows. About 10 hands in at $25-$50, I'm on the button and call against one limper (player to my immediate left) with A9spades. Flop brings two spades, nut flush on the turn. I'm so jacked to go all-in, I bet out of turn. Limper chuckles, "Let me check already," He checks, I go all in, he folds. Told me later he had a set of 8s. I told him he did the right thing by folding. We both laugh -- it was obvious to everyone what I had.

Later, at $50-$100, I'm dealt JJ one off the button. Two limpers, I raise for $200. Folded all the way to the blinds, who call. Flop comes 578 rainbow.

Table checks. Turn is an A. First limper checks, second comes in for $400. It's still early, so I don't have a good read on this player. I'm putting him on a straight draw or an outright bluff, so I call. First limper folds.

River is a 2. We both check. I turn up my JJ, he mucks. My first good-sized pot. Yippee! I'm up to about $1,500.

I really tick off a local a few hands later when I limp in from late position with K5 spades. The flop brings a 5, but two spades to boot. Turn is a blank and is checked around (three players). River doesn't bring a spade, but a K for two pair. Early position player goes in for $800 and I go all-in. Player behind me folds.

Early pos. player had pocket 9s and wasn't too happy to be beaten as he was. I just said lines to the effect that I had to uphold my image as a green player (knowing full well if the flop missed me, I'd fold. I'm told varying one's play is key in tournaments, and that's what I told him afterward).

Later, at $100-$200, I raise two callers for $400 with A8 suited. Flop brings two clubs, and it's checked to me, and I get my free card on the turn. Again, it's checked around, and a Kc falls on the river. Checked around again to me, and I go in for $400. Both players call and muck in quick fashion as I turn up my cards. Is it really this easy?

Slowly but surely, players hit the rail. My goal is simple: Get in the money. Later, I'd realize that this was an unsound goal. What's wrong with winning the whole damn thing my first time out? Besides, with a chip count of $8K, I should have set my sights higher.

At any rate, my chip count, plus a shorthanded table (now down to 2 tables of 6), dictates I can play a little more liberally. I get it down to 10 players when my AQ catches an A knocks out player No. 11's A10. My chip count is around $7K.

My strategy for getting in the money helped get me there, but when it was down to the final five players, I was severely shortstacked (we're now at $400-$800, and my early position calls have others coming in way over the top for amounts I'm not ready to risk). Blinds were eating me up, and my play was very conservative (to wit, I mucked KK vs. a flop of A33 when UTG came in for $4,000).

Down to about $2.5K, I go all-in with the rest of my chips against UTG with KJd. He's got AK offsuit.

Flop is 39K rainbow, but with one diamond. A non-diamond 10 falls on the turn, so I need a Q (for a straight) or a J (2 pair) to beat him. I get neither and win $95 (minus $57 for entry fee and buy-in) for a $38 profit.

I used to be a blackjack man, but I think I've found a new game.

Congratulations on a great debut performance.

You will no doubt play better once you get more experience.
