Congratulations to Roy Cooke for writing what I think is the very best article ever on poker play.

You can read it in the current edition of Card Player or on line at www.CardPlayer.com.

Hi, Barry --

For those of you who don't know, Barry Shulman is owner and Publisher of Card Player magazine, as well as one of the top-rated tournament poker players in the world, and we appreciate his posts on our United Poker Forum.

Yes, indeed, I read Roy Cooke's column and agree that it is excellent -- and beyond. I particularly liked his words:

"When playing in a very loose game, try to keep the pots small preflop with your marginal hands. Don’t take marginal edges. This removes value from your post-flop plays by giving your opponents a better price to draw at you."

That, in a nutshell, is the reason why I maintain my controversial stance that most professional players raise too often before the flop in limit hold 'em games. Yes, you should raise often, but not nearly as often as most pros do. In some cases you can actually reduce a small edge by raising -- in a failed attempt to maximize it.

Remember that in hold 'em, few starting hands have significant edges, because too much of the value of your hand is defined by the flop when three cards arrive all at once. In seven-stud, by contrast, it's much more likely that strong hands will still be leading by the second betting round.

Anyway, there are many more great tips in Roy Cooke's column. Thanks, Barry, for bringing it to our attention.

Straight Flushes,
Mike Caro
