q9 on the button, ScroogeMcd, 26. Nov 2002 16:12

A situation came up recently in a extremely loose aggressive online 15-30 game in which a friend and myself differed in opinion as to the correct play. On this deal there was two make up blinds who posted 1 and 2 off the button and I held q9 offsuit on the button. It was passed around to a the makeps who both checked. I felt the makeups would have raised with any pair,2 face cards or ace. I raised in an attempt to thin the field and put some dead money into the pot. I felt my hand was better than random in this spot (mike caros poker probe shows 37.5% 3 handed and 28.5% 4 handed against random cards) and by raising i could create a +EV situation and possibly set up a steal situation on the flop if everybody missed. My friend argued that my raise was never going to steal the blinds and the loose aggressive nature of the opponents meant that I was unlikely to steal postflop. While I agree that stealing was unlikely as I felt the players would only fold the worst 20-30% on their hands in this spot I still think it was plus EV to raise given I had position and a better then random hand. What are other forum members opinions?

If the raise by itself is +EV, then there's no question you should do it, even if it doesn't thin the field. Further, it is definitely going to cause everyone to misread you on the flop.

I don't think it's ever far from wrong to raise on the button with a hand good enough to call. Keep in mind that even when it's a theoretical -EV play, you get a lot of that EV back on the occasions when it goes all-check to you on the flop, or when your opponents misread your hand because of the raise, or when you gain information.
