Omaha-8 tourney decision, Andrew Wells, 23. Nov 2002 11:32

Four players remain, just went up to 1000-2000 limit. Pays 40%-30%-15%-10%-5%. I have the button with QsJhTs9d, and T2000. Small blind is chip leader with T7500 after posting. Big blind has T1500 after posting. UTG has T1500, and folds. I can fold and try to hang on to second place, as the other two shortstacks are under more pressure. I can raise all-in and risk going out fourth, maybe steal the blinds, or tighten the grip on second place if I'm called and I get half or all. I can just automatic muck up to five or six hands and probably take third place. I completely reject calling, as either blind can get me all-in. If the small blind folds and the big blind checks, I'm the lowest stack if I flop nothing and have to fold. I got the worst possible result with my decision (obviously or I wouldn't be posting this). What is my play?

I would fold the hand in this spot. The UTG will be all in on one of the two next hands. I don't think you will be able to steal the blinds. If I were the BB with 1500 left after posting 1k, I am certainly calling the allin raise by you no look.

It's much easier to make a wait and see decision playing hold'em. However, this is Omaha-8 where a blind can escape for half a pot. So, just because someone is all-in doesn't necessarily mean they're a favorite to get knocked out. The other problem is that if I fold, the small blind may decide to let the big blind take it. With the large stack, the small blind doesn't need to attack right away. The next hand I'll be out of position to the large stack, plus anything I come in with from here on I get played with. This may be the only hand I have left with some leverage. It's not a great hand, but it is playable. The good thing about folding and waiting is that I get to see how the stacks change before I have to put up my big blind. That can help me decide if I should go all-in on my blind or not. The picture will be clearer by then. You would have lasted longer, I went with the raise.

I agree that calling is NOT an option. Either raise or fold.

Advantages to raising... There is a fair amount of pressure on both blinds to fold. The Big stack will want to get one or two more of you little guys out before he goes to war. The big blind might be thinking like you... namely, if I fold I can get through the blinds and maybe the other small stack will go bust. Also, you are really looking for high hands at this point. You have a not bad high hand... the problem with it is, of course, that it WILL have to improve if you are called -- you have Q high. And, since you are all-in you will not be able to force out an ace that misses.

Let's assume you raise and sweep the pot. You will ahve c. T5000 and will be in a good spot to come 2nd (which is triple your current prize money) or even first (quadruple your current prize money).

Advantages to folding... you will maximize your chance of getting to third with is only 1/2 again as much money as you now have.

I would raise. I am still trying to win the tournament and I am not going to do that by sitting with my T2000 and coasting into 3rd. Get it in and cross my fingers. 1/2 again the prize money is not worth sitting to me... I want 3 or 4 times more than I now have.

I thought there was no guarantee that one of the other shortstacks would get blinded out, and I really didn't want to just get through my blinds. I had arrived at this spot by sitting on my hands at the final table, after doubling through early when it was 500-1000. I let the other players knock me into the money, so I had a tight image at the moment. I did not think the big blind would call without a good hand, since UTG was in more trouble. I figured the small blind wouldn't get involved without a premium hand since that could radically affect the stack situation, and might get the big blind involved as well. I decided to play for the win, but the big blind had a better hand with AcKd7c4c. The board came Jd 8c 6s 5h 8h and I was out.

I ran As7s4sKc v QhJhTd9c on Pokerwiz for 500,000 hands.

The QJT9 hand will win 52% of the times for high... That means, of course, that you are in HUGE trouble when he calls you since he has low outs and you have none.

I still figure I'm raising though. You got unlucky and he woke up with a hand that could call.

I had QTs not QJs, but that should make virtually no difference. I am very surprised to hear that my hand was a slight preflop favorite to win high. It sure looked to me like I was maybe a 4:3 underdog for high. I guess that shows the extra strength of the straight draws in Omaha. However AK74s is still better since it has draws for half the pot I didn't have.

I appreciate the advice you offered from my earlier Omaha-8 post. I played much better this time. The adjustments worked. Thanks.
