There are a couple tournaments coming up in Tunica MS this next year--the World Poker Open and the Tunica Classic. I have never played in a tourney before, but I would love the experience. Buy in is pretty low on most of the events (100-300 bucks). I don't live too far from Tunica and will be getting a couple of days play at the Horseshoe in December (my first time in an actual casino). I have played in many online tourneys and always place well.

I know that the possibility is very real that I will gain nothing more than experience from playing in a big tournament like this, but I have a great deal of confidence in myself (not necessarily skillwise, just in general) and I want to do it. So here is my question. Do you have to qualify to play in these tournaments? Can you just play one event? If you do have to qualify, how do you go about doing it? What is a supersatellite? Any other relevant information about how to get into a tournament would be of great assistance. Thanks!

You don't have to qualify if you are willing to pay the full buy in for the event in question. The super-satalites (sp?) and satalites are ways to 'qualify' to play in the main event without having to pay the buy-in. You pay the super or satalite buy-in, and if you do well enough you win a seat in the big event. A super is basically a multi-table tourney where the number of seats awarded to the big event depends on the number of people who play in the super. A regular satalite is typically a one table tourney where only the winner gets in.

I share your feelings on these Tunica tourneys, so maybe I will see you down there. I play to play the satalites for the WPO since the buy-ins for the main events seem to start at $500. I wouldn't mind paying $300 for the 'experience' and long shot chances, but $500 just feels like too much.

So the satellite is free? All you have to do is show up, or do you have to register? I may come down for the satellite and shoot for a spot. The buyins for the Tunica classic are pretty low, so I may just pony up for those. How exciting! Does anyone know how McEvoy and Cloutier's books on Tournament Poker are? What about Sklansky's Tournament poker for advanced players?

Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression about the satalites. There is a buy in, but it is much less than the tournament fee. I think it is usually 1/10th the buy in to the big event plus a small entry fee for the casino.

As far as books, Sklansky's is very good. It very clearly explains and demonstrates the difference in proper tournament strategy vs typical ring game play. Highly recommend it.

Mick ...most casinos offering higher buy in tournies run supers where its a cheaper buyin and multiple seats are awarded for entry into the higher buy in event thats being offered through these multi table supersatelites whereas a satelite simply awards one seat for entry into the higher priced event and is a one table winner take all entry..
An example would be that you get into a super satelite for $100 with four tables and if you end up in the top four or five you get entry into the main event offered that is lets say $500 to enter if you hadnt won a satelite for a $100....
Let me tell ya that confidence combined with a thorough grounding in the fundamentals is a powerful combo.. By all means get in there and gain experience..Its the ONLY way to become a winner..I do suggest that you start with the smaller events and enjoy the aura...
You can just go ahead and buy in for these Tunica events...
There are very rare tournies where you must prequalify..
I may be there myself for the events
