Poker tournament at house - looking for suggestions/tips, Rob M., 20. Nov 2002 17:49

Hey all:

Got a small (16-20) person tourney coming up at the house, and am looking for suggestions/enhancements to the format we have in place (ie past experiences, expert opinions...).

It's a No Limit Texas Hold'em Tourney, every player gets $2,000 in chips, play till only one person left - going for around 3-3.5 hours long.

If we have 16-17 people, gonna go with 2 tables of 8 (+1). If we have 18+, would go with 3 tables of 6+.

If 2 tables, each table plays separately until down to 8 left total, with no table going below 4 players, or else reseat to make it even again. If 3 tables, go until 16 to combine to 2 tables, with no table going below 3 players at one time, and then follow rules of 2 tables above.

We have a small and big blind system ($10/$25 to start), and after 1 hour, and every 30 minutes after that, we double the blinds/minimum bet.

2nd place gets their money back, 1st place takes the rest.

What do you think of this system? Anything we could do better?

Thanks for any feedback you can provide :)

I would pay more places if I were you. You are talking about 1st taking 30K and 2nd getting 2K if I am reading you correctly. Pay 1-3 at least.

If you want to build this into a regular event, spread the prize money around. The best way is to take about 20% of the entry for bounties.

Example: $20 for prize pool, $5 for bounties. Every player who eliminates a player recieves $5. There will be an extra Bounty (winner didn't get eliminated.) Put a double bounty and the first one eliminated.

Keep the winner take all format, but allow "deals" with three or four players remaining.

Thanks for the tips about bounties. I like the idea! Gives everyone a stake besides winning it all .

The mini-tourney is Saturday, so if you think of anything else, please pass it along. If we get any bigger, I'll invite you all :)

What kind of "deals" would you suggest? I think we'll implement the bounty system for sure.

A deal is an agreement between the remaining players to split the total prize up in some way. It is usually similiar to the percentage of chips each player has remaining.

We have a great one here that we use. We use the no-limit world series levels. You can get them from there website. After so many rounds antes come into play. As for pay-out, ask your players. They are the ones you would like to keep happy, and coming back.

Thanks for the tip. Do you have a URL of where these levels can be found? binions' website is not that helpful.

Tournament structures and payouts on PokerStars are very good and almost mirror WSOP payouts. Simply look at tourneys that have been played for 20, 50, 100 players, etc.

For a home tourney, simply agree on one money spot for each table, 3 tables = 3places, etc.

If deals are allowed, many factors are involved. The big chip leader wants(and should get) a bigger percentage, the short stack is hollerin " let's chop it!" etc. In a home game it could lead to arguments and hurt feelings, running off the live players. I suggest agreeing to a fixed number of places, based on entrants, before the tourney starts. After you establish a regular game, you can fiddle with the payouts and dealmaking.

bounties are a lot of fun. I used to play tournament bridge for master points, don't ask me why, lol, but the success came when lots of people could win section awards, not just overall, since many players NEVER have a real shot at winning overall.

The bounties give weaker players a chance to have fun, and actually improve the chance for the better players, since they can adjust to the wild swings that some people will take to win a bounty! and actually profit from it.

just in case you have people who don't like the idea of carrying cash to a poker tourney, consider this. Let them buy chips with pay pal money, lol. I don't think it would be a good idea to advertise that people were buying poker chips, since pay pal refuses to do business with gaming sites, but neteller charges an arm and a leg to tranfer money between individuals, so that isn't a great idea.

IF YOU EVER DO THAT make SURE that in the comment section of the PURCHASE request that they specify that they have received and approved the SERVICE, or you open yourself to people later disputing the transaction. I WENT THROUGH this once when I lent someone some money and they disputed the pay pal repayment, and it was VERY hard to get pay pal to fix it!!
