7 stud ? for Ashley Adams, Roy Cooke, et all., Mark, 19. Nov 2002 18:41

I usually play hold'em but sometimes when I'm waiting for a table to open I will play a $2-10 spread limit 7 stud game. I don't know much about the starting requirements beside wired 9s, split Js, three to a draw or 3 generally high cards.

I feel very comfortable sitting down at the table as all the players are very straight forward. I have not yet had a losing session.

I have many questions but the 2 I would really like answered are
1. How should I bet in a spread limit game? Always bet the max? Is it worth opening with 10 if no one will call?

2. Should I loosen up considerably when shorthanded against tight players?

Thanks in advance

Mark

These are good questions.

Here's what I think.

In a spread limit game you might want to change your normal betting strategy from that of a fixed limit game. Think about your objective. You want to limit the field, but you don't want to knock everyone out if you have a very strong hand. How do you achieve this?

I would raise the bring in with any Premium Pair but I would only raise it a small amount with Aces or Kings. So if the bring in is $1, I might raise it to $5 or so in a $2-10 game. Again, my objective is to thin the field. I don't want three or four or more callers for fourth street. But I do want one who makes an incorrect call. If I raise to $10 I may knock everyone out. If I just call the $1 bring in I'll probably get many callers. So I raise $4 or $5. You'll have to determine the right amount by guaging things in your particular game.
Note: I wouldn't do this with 10s, Jacks or Queens. And I wouldn't do this if the pot had already been raised by someone else. In those instances I'd raise the full amount. I'm happy to win the entire pot with hands less than Aces or Kings or if there is already some action -- especially if the action has been called. And if it's been called then I'm unlikely to get everyone to fold by MY raise.
On Fourth Street, I would bet the max regardless of whether I improved or not -- unless I guaged someone else to be in the lead. But if I had Aces or if they became Aces up I would bet or raise the full $10. I want to win the pot right there or get someone calling the maximum amount to see fifth street. I certainly don't want to give a free or cheap card.
Some spread limit players, with Premium Pairs, like to gradually walk people up the ladder: $2 on Third Street, $4 of Fourth, $8 on Fifth. I think this is a recipe for getting into trouble. Take the pot if you can on Fourth for the full bet or make them pay to beat you with more cards.
Against few tight players I'd loosen up my starting standards on Third, but I'd make sure to respond more deferentially to pressure from the other players. I'd be more aggressive on subsequent streets to win the pots with bluffs and semi-bluffs. But if I was played back at I'd be more likely to concede than to limp.
I'd also pay attention to the rake. In a short handed highly raked game it may be that the only person making money is the house. That's because the pots will be smaller and the percentage of the amount you win which is raked will be higher than in the standard multi-way pot.
Feel free to email me for more specific information if you'd like.
