My internet results so far, I am pleading for your advice., Chad, 19. Nov 2002 13:22

OK, a few weeks ago, I asked for advice on internet poker sites.
So far this is what I have experienced.

I deposited $300 in a planetpoker account and played 3-6, and some 5-10, along with a few tourneys. I love their software and also enjoy their tourneys (Even though they don't have many of them).
However I just can't win there. I played what I thought was better than average poker, maybe a little too tight, when compared to some of the maniacs I went against. In my first 3 hours of play I received wired AA's 3 times in 3 different positions and never slowplayed them. All 3 times they were either beat on turn or on river. As my bankroll continued to shrink, my last hand consisted of QQ's wired on the button, UTG open-calls, folded to me, I raise, small blind folds, bigblind calls, UTG calls. Flop comes 852 rainbow, Checked to me, I bet, BB folds, UTG raises, I reraise, UTG caps, I call. Turn comes 3 of last suit, UTG checks, I bet, UTG raises, I call. River is Ace. UTG bets I call, He turns over A-10 OS?
What the hell?
There were a few hands I noticed like this that I would call sketchy at best.
Also I did see one guy in a 9 handed 3-6 game win 12 hands in a row at Planet Poker which seems a little unusual.

Even though I enjoy the site and the customer service was pretty good, I don't feel comfortable playing there, and I don't just think it is because I lost.

As far as PartyPoker goes, I decided to give it another try as I swore before that I would never be back, I had just seen too many crazy hands there. But some of you convinced me to try it, with the concensus saying that they have the best live going right now. So I decided to try it, also in part because I had heard that they had new software that was very nice. Plus I think watching the show on the the Travel Channel about the Million Dollar Tourney on the cruise gave me a little more trust for them, I don't know why.

This was a big mistake, after uninstalling the old software from my computer and downloading the new software, I decided to start out small depositing 150.00
Right off the bat I had problems, I entered a $5 NL tourney and noticed that I could see everything on the screen except the chips, dealer button, and call, check, fold buttons. I had to move the cursor along the icons of each player to keep track of where the button should be. As I tried to play "actually in the blind" based on who had cards in their hands and who didn't, I summoned for a floorman who spent about 15 minutes going back and forth trying to figure it out, after failing he told me I would receive an email within an hour on how to fix the problem. I never have received an email and it has been over 24 hours now. So after the tourney ended, in which I didn't win 1 single hand but still found a way to finish 4th, I call the customer support number and all I got was a brush off, saying to uninstall the software again and redownload, so I did and still had the same problems.
I decided to fight my way through a 3-6 game and the very first hand someone flopped 4 7's over JJ's full. This is why I left in the first place I thought.
I didn't personally experience too many badbeats at PartyPoker last night, but I lost their too.
My worst hand there would be when I had AhQh, on the button, their were about 3-4 LOOSE players in the game, but it was hard to put a read on what they might be raising so wildly on because this hand was early in my session. Anyway once loose cannon open calls from UTG+1, 3 callers to me, I raise, both blinds fold, UTG+1 reraises, 1 mpp calls, I call. Flop comes Qd4s6c, UTG+1 bets, mpp folds, I raise, UTG+1 calls. Turn comes 2s, UTG+1 checks, I bet, UTG+1 raises, I reraise, UTG+1 CAPS, and I think damn I guess he flopped a set or was going crazy with pocket 22's before flop.
River comes a Kh, UTG+1 bets, I call, he turns over AKs.
Now sure he had me before flop, but after flop he was dead to a KING, then picked up a spade draw on the turn, but he sure was going nuts with this draw to not even have a pair, don't you think?

This is the type of "QUESTIONABLE" play that I run into time and time again on the sites that I have played.
Am I just sour?
Is this just a downward rut that all of us go through that just seems to be happening to me everytime I play online? Because I have been on a tremendous run in live B&M games.

Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated, is there a site out there that I should try that I don't know about?

I am on the verge of quitting online poker forever, unless something happens fast.

Thanks
Chad

I am definitely now with the 'online poker isnt fixed by the sites' lobby maybe there are alot of people playing in tandom together but you should be aware of that anyway !

I lose online poker when i play bad, i get drawn out on when i am playing good, in my opinion you just remember the bad stuff. I mean everyday i get 2 trains to work 95% of the time it is an easy trouble free journey , but i only remember the 5% of sitting around in the cold waiting for an overpacked train.....er there is a point there honest !

My advice would be to stick to tourneys with mutli - table as there is alot less opportunity for collusion.

Also my computer went nuts on Paradise Poker and they refunded me the entry fee after i sent them an email, so just must be a dodgy site you were on

This is one of those really unhelpful posts that says "I play online, and I don't have any problems."

I play at Paradise Poker quite a bit in the low-limit areas, and the players are the most volatile and inexplicable lot I've come across (today I saw a player eliminated from a LIMIT hold 'em tournament before the button reached him).

Paradise's software has a few little annoyances (tool tips don't always appear correctly, and you can't see your chip balance while being prompted for bet/raise/fold) but seems reliable.

I tried Party Poker and didn't think they had any edge on Paradise, so I went back.

Online play gives new meaning to the phrase "sucked out". Have heart! Unbelievable games occur because players are using unbelievably poor strategy. I'd love to see some of these players in person just to see what sort of drugs they're taking between mouse clicks.

I don't like online poker.

I have bought in twice now over 1 year and will not again for a very long time. I don't feel cheated or frustrated with bad beats, I simply don't like playing online and I don't know why.

The last time I bought in, I bought in for $40. I started out playing $1-2 hold'em. After a bit of a grind, I moved up to $2-4 and a little $3-6, $5-10, and a few $10-20 hands. I'm quickly up about $500 in something like 25 hours of play. And now, just like the first time I bought in, I'm back down to $40 dollars.

It took me a while to figure out why I lost all my winnings (twice now) but now I think i know why, I sort of semi tilt when I play online. I get very impatient as soon as I start to play a ring game, and cannot wait to win a hand. I push too many mediocre hands because I see so many people play nothing to the river. I noticed I started to play like my opponents.

The biggest problem is I'm not interested in the game. I pay attention to other things and will flip through my poker books when I'm not in a hand.

I do not have this problem when I play live. Quite frequently, I'll sit and fold for a long time and not get the least bit impatient.

So I stopped playing on line except for tournaments. I'm back to grinding out a profit, but am keeping interested. I will also take long breaks from playing online and only play short sessions (2 hours max unless in a big multitable tournament)

I got pretty frustrated until I took a good hard look at how I was playing. If you haven't done a self analysis, make a list of all the hands you play and the position you play them out of next time your online. Then compare them to what the books say, keeping in mind that in looser games you should play even tighter. You might be surprised to see your too loose, just not as loose as your opponents, I was.

Hi Mark,
Bingo. You have succinctly identified the problem with online poker.

I recently turned $125. into over $1,200, then promptly lost the whole amount, for precisely the same reasons you listed. I lose focus, get impatient, push hands against my better judgement. In short play poorly.

Live games are more stimulating and therefore engage your attention. Online poker is mundane, even tedious, then you are done.

I think the bad plays/bad beats to tend to stick in our minds more. You can't help but look at their cards sometime and wonder what the heck they were thinking, but sometimes is works. The thing to remember is that you won't get to see their hands all those times they miss their miracle cards. I don't think the sites are fixed, I think there are just a lot loose/crazy players online. All you can do is play 'correctly' and in the long run you should come ahead. Your variance will just be higher than you might be used to at a B & M room.

If you don't want to keep playing on the sites you have already tried, you might try Ultimatebet. I think they have the best shuffling algorithm, and the games are steady. There are some loose players, but you don't see those amazing suck outs all the time. Hope that helps,

Lee (Bthoven on UB and Party)

I play lowlimit online (1-2 up to 3-6) plus some tournaments and have done so for almost 2 years.
I have netted a profit of over 11.000$ but I can say that there are sites that I dont play. Partypoker as you mentioned is one of them. I had the exact same experience as you. There are other sites I don't play either. I will not say which they are or which sites I find legit because it might come out as I am promoting other sites.
I just wanted you to know that even a winning player like myself think some weird things occur at the tables in some rooms. I'm tiltproof and play by the books but at some sites that just doesn't work.

/Martin
