I just re-read one of the first poker books i ever bought. At the time it wasn't much help to me, but now it makes more sense. In Andy Nelson's POKER - A Winners Guide, there is a small section on tournament play and I was surprised to read how tight Andy plays early on.

I am definately tighter than most at my levels and have had success doing this, but Andy blew me away. He says, in the early rounds he only plays AA and KK, and sometimes QQ, if the situation is right.

Playing this tight early on will project a rock solid image, definately helping later on, but is being so tight necessary? What about AK, AQ and JJ on the button? I can see not playing these hands out of early position, but what about in late position?

He also says the drawing hands (e.g. 10-10, J-10, etc.) should only be played late in the tournament. I tend to disagree with this as you need more people in a pot in order to correctly draw.

What are your thoughts? Also, can you guys relate what you play early on to your image and how other play against you.

Thanks all

Mark

Hello Mark

I have not read the book...nor do I condsider myslef a top tournament player..However that strategy is WAY too tight and has no consideration for player texture!

From what I have read, many scholars (such as Mason Malmuth) consider Andy Nelson's books to be somewhere between poor and mediocre. For good tournament books look for books by T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy.
