i play in a $1--$2--$5 seven card stud hi game ($1 bet $2 on a pair $5 on 6th and 7th street) with $1ante 3 raise limit and 9 players. The game is extremely loose with an average of 5 callers on the first three cards but 6-7-8 or even all 9 is not uncommon. Every once in a while it is heads up or 3 way on the first 3 cards( that only seems to happen when I am losing though. lol ) About half the time it is raised at least one time on the first 3 cards. Normally the hand comes down to at least 3 players on 7th street (the players dont like to bet heads up so i usually dont bet em heads up although i am tryin to encourage it and it is catchin on but i do bet em sometimes). It is very hard to buy a hand as some players will call if they have the board beat if they r last to act just to keep u honest. Some of the players must see 6 cards every hand almost ( I have seen em go hours without folding the first 3 ) so every pot is at least a decent pot $30+ and a few times a night gets as high as $100 . The dealer gets an ante left up by the winner and we play cut buddy ( a couple of dollars with a couple of players) so ante doesnt hurt u to bad , but can hurt u sometimes. The players are loose but not entirely stupid , they play often enough they have a good feel for the game( they read hands fairly well, check a lot and raise hell when they have something) but they still like to call and gamble. This makes the game really frustrating as someone draws out on u often. The cut money is not much of a factor as the house lady usually loses all the cut money and a couple hundred of her own. There is probably a couple of thousand dollars go through the table in a nights time( we only play this particular game once a week sometimes for 30+ hours but there r similiar games around town) so there is plenty of money if u can get it and plenty of player probably 30 or so with 12 or more on any given night . For the most part the players r easy except a couple can play pretty good. I have watched a 2 guys beat the game on a regular basis ( almost every night) but they played totally opposite ( this is over a long period of time bout 2 or 3 years but only one of them play now) so i know the game is beatable. i win a little but not as much as i should. If anyone could give me some suggestions on how to play i would appreciate it. If u need more info i can give u that also. If u r gonna say start with medium strength hands or something give me an example such as ( 7s 7h 5s) so i will understand better. U can e-mail me at trout@inetone.net .

waiting for input

I can think of a Dave Letterman top ten list of suggestions for this type of game, but i"ll just mention a couple.

Live Cards are the number one criteria. this game is mostly showdown, with heavy betting on the last two streets. If your cards are out, you can't improve to the big hand needed to win.

You need build a BIG hand to win. This is BIG flushes, Big straights, and Big pairs to make Big full houses.

OF all flushes that can be made, over half of them are King high or Ace high. Drawing to less is asking for trouble.

Start with pairs that are LIVE and BIG. If you haven't improved enough by the expensive streets, don't take any heat.

Spend your sitting out time to read your opponets. Playing the same guys all the time has an advantage, if you know how to use it.

Talk loose and play tight. Make em pay when you have the goods.

With a little work and perserverence, you could probably lease a new Honda with the money you take outa that game.

Make sure you are playing correctly. You should only see 4th street about 15% of the time. Get Roy West's book on stud and study it.

I scanned your post again, and don't think (I may have missed it) I saw what the rake was. These limits seem very rough with a $1 ante. With that said, I think the strategy I would employ is:

VERY TIGHT/AGGRESSIVE. Play only BIG draws and get every dime you can with them. A small three flush, such as 368 suited should (IMO) be mucked immmediately when there are so many people seeing 4th street. A-B-C play with aggression would definitely be the way I'd go. I also would not try any trapping or other fancy plays unless I had quads, straight flush, A's full or other monster hand, as any "moves" you make will not be understood, and wasted as the other players seem not to do anything but play their own hand and disregard everything else.

Anyone disagree?

Rick

The main problem with playing very tight in a private game is that you may eventually not get invited back.
