Omaha-8 tourney advice needed, Andrew Wells, 7. Nov 2002 21:22

In a fast moving Omaha-8 fixed limit tournament where the blinds go up every 15 minutes, you get about 10 hands per level. My strategy has been to wait for hands where all four cards work together, avoiding middle ranks. I'm also going to play any A2, and A3 with another wheel card. I haven't picked up any of these hands in the first four rounds for the past three tournaments. These are morning on-line games with several hundred entries that I play after breakfast before going to my local card room. What happens is that once I do take a favorable flop with a hand that I need to see the river with, if I don't win one side then I am severely shortstacked. I probably get one more opportunity as an all-in because I haven't been building a stack. Because I see many players show down some real cheese, I'm wondering how much I should loosen up. Maybe I've just been unlucky not getting at least some A2 rag rag to play, and eventually the deck will hit me. So my question is whether it is worth calling one bet before the flop with some hands that I don't consider profitable in a live ring game. Are any of these following example hands good enough to loosen up with in the early rounds when not in the blinds?

[A] K Q J 4 (QJ suited)
[B] Q Q T 4 (QT suited)
[C] Q 5 4 2 (54 suited)
[D] A T T 4 (unsuited)
[E] J J 3 2 (unsuited)
[F] 8 7 3 2 (87 suited)
[G] 7 5 4 2 (unsuited)
[H] A 6 5 4 (unsuited)

>> [A] K Q J 4 (QJ suited)

I'd only play this one in late position after a few limpers, or in the big blind.

> [B] Q Q T 4 (QT suited)

Same answer for this one. In both cases however, if everyone folded to me on the button, I would attempt a steal raise with both of these hands.

> [C] Q 5 4 2 (54 suited)

Not a very good hand, but barely playabe in late position, and worth a call from the BB.

> [D] A T T 4 (unsuited)

You could actually re-rase a late position raiser with this hand. Funny though, it's not quite good enough to limp or raise with from early position. At this point, you should be getting the message that position is VERY important.

> [E] J J 3 2 (unsuited)

Another steal raising hand from late position if you are the first one in. Also worth a limp from middle position iif the texture of the game is passive.

> [F] 8 7 3 2 (87 suited)

I would defend my BB, and 'maybe' limp on the button in a multi-way pot.

> [G] 7 5 4 2 (unsuited)

Same as above, although stragely enough I like this one better, as it features three wheel card.

> [H] A 6 5 4 (unsuited)

This hand is playable, although you may not want to play it up front in a ring game. From middle to late position in a tournament you described, you should be raising with this hand.

You left out an entire group of hands that are the ones you should really be looking for. You mention A-2 A-3 type hands, but neglect to mention the powerful A-K hands:

A-K-3-10
A-K-Q-4
A-2-2-K

etc.

Hands like these do very well in heads up situations with position. In a tournament, you want to increase the chances of winning the pot, moreso than winning big multi-way pots. With the above hands, you should do everything you can to get it heads up, and that means raise, or re-raise.

hands A and B have no chance to win low, because of this do not play well from any position

hands C thru H can win both ways, because of this you may want to play from a later position

Well it does seem obvious now that I have been playing these tournaments too tightly. As for high only type hands, there is no possible low by the river somewhere around 40% of the time due to the eight or better qualifier. I'm certainly going to play a hand like K Q J T, but the three legged hands with extra values seem very borderline. I'm going to have to take some more shots in reasonable situations when the value of chips are still low. Any one of these hands could have made the difference in a later round from being all-in with less chips vs. having enough to play another hand.

These were all marginal hands I mucked with in the last two tourneys. It seems I misplayed [H] A 6 5 4 (level 3 10-20 in the cutoff). If I remember correctly, there were several limpers. I can see your point about raising here. I think you're also right about the AK type hands you mentioned, and I'll remember that if there's a situation where I can thin the field. However in these on-line events players will come in for two bets in the early rounds with anything they play for one bet. The message I got from you is that I need to be making it three bets when possible with decent hands, going for the win not the volume. That's going to be the primary adjustment hereon. Strange as this may sound, it seems that middle position sometimes becomes more of a disadvantage than early position on the turn if the pot starts to get jammed. Especially when holding a nut flush draw with 2nd or 3rd made low.
