Too aggressive w/ Set vs 3 flush?, Jeffrey Biship, 7. Nov 2002 00:13 | ||

| I'm trying to play more aggressively. I know I sometimes err on the side of too aggressive. Was this one of those times (despite the result)? .50/1.00 limit hold'em on Planet. I'm 2 off the button with QcQd. Three limpers to me. I raise. Folded to the big blind who calls. The other limpers call. Flop: 8s Ks Qs I'm not thrilled at the flop, but all is not lost. Action goes check, check, check, bet. I raise. Big blind folds, player to his left check-raises, original bettor calls, I cap, check-raiser calls, original bettor folds! I certainly wasn't expecting that, but I think it can't be a bad thing. Turn: 3d Check-raiser checks, I take the free card (which is why I four bet the flop). River: 3s Well. I got there. My opponent bets, I raise, he calls. My opponent had KcJs. I was surprised to learn that I had GIVEN a free card on the turn and not taken one. I assumed with that many players seeing the flop, I was most likely drawing. I wanted to take myself a chance at a free card on the turn AND charge any one card flush draws the maximum. Was I too aggressive on the flop? Too passive on the turn? How would you have played this hand? Thanks, Jeff | ||

| You definitely should have capped the flop. I can't imagine anybody arguing that point. When checked to on the turn you should bet. If somebody had bet into you, you can just call unless you are getting 3 or 4 callers then I would raise. If the river is a blank, I would also bet the river as you will get paid off by 2 pair or top pair enough to make your bet profitable. | ||

| Capping the flop with top set (KK would have raised pre-flop) is a good thing. You should have bet the turn as it was checked to you. His check indicates he is weak becuase If you opponent has the nut flush, he knows you don't and won't give you a free card so he would bet. If he doesn't, he might fear you do and simply call. I don't see any chance of a reraise here unless he is a good player and knows you didn't have the flush. (Are you the type of player who would have raised with A-10s (or lower) after 4 people limped in. (K Q J of spades are accounted for).) But even if he does, it is an easy call, and bet/raise on the river. Playing a set aggressive puts | ||

| The flop play is good. But when checked to you on the turn you gotta bet it! He is scared of the flush (if he has a small one he is scared of a bigger/nut flush). Then on the river you can bet if you fill up or bet if no spade comes, or check if you think he has the flush already made. Any lower set or two pair pays you off, its worth betting in the long run. | ||

| bnb's point about filling up is a good one because one has more outs to fill up a set thans one would have to hit a flush after getting 4 on the flop. Seems like nobody questions calling the flush draw. | ||
