| Pre-flop in a holden game, if your in the BB and raised by the button, what can you call with if 1.) you don't know the button and everyone else folded? 2.)everyone else folded and you know the button will raise ANY two cards in this position? Also, if everyone else folds, how much stronger does the BB have to be than the button to call a button's raise? (is the difference between 87o and 86o enough or is more like 98s vs 86o) In other words what "strength" does the BB need to offset the disadvantage of position? Thanks Mark | ||

| Assuming I know the player on the button will always go for a steal and the small blind has folded, I'm still getting around 3.5:1 odds to see the flop when the button raises. If there were no positional disadvantage then I would be right to play on with all but the worst 28% of the possible starting hands. Considering my opponent will act last for the rest of the hand, I want to see the flop with only the best 60% instead of 72%. I also would want to raise back preflop with the very best 12%. That means on average I would reraise one out of eight times, and call four out of eight times. If I know nothing about how my opponent plays, I'm going to have to assume the raise is a semi-steal. That the button has some values to make the raise and not let me play against the small blind or chop. I probably don't defend my big blind as often as some players would. In this case I adjust up or down from the best 60% depending on how well I think my opponent plays after the flop. I'll come in with more hands if I know that player is easy to resteal against. Someone who will only raise with big cards, and lay down on the turn if they don't make a pair. Against a good player I probably only defend with about the top 40% of hands. There isn't really any fixed set of hands that are defendable. It is a function of who my opponent is, my current table image, and whether there might be some future value getting someone to start on tilt. | ||
