Did we lose paypal?, whiskeytown, 3. Nov 2002 15:41

I have received a message from Paradise (where I don't play anymore) informing me that Paypal would no longer accept payments from gambling organizations.

Paypal is the third financial source I have used to finance online poker...(Firepay was first, but they quit accepting Visa...then I used the Visa directly....) - this blows.

As I, Mike Caro and other have pointed out...if this is true, then it will probably be a blow for online poker. The only people who are going to jump thru the hoops are pros and old time players. The brand new amateur looking for a quick game after seeing Rounders isn't going to jump thru hoops to get their account started...(and probably won't wait 2 weeks to do it via check or money order)

ah well...maybe I'll just cash out less...leave me a bigger buffer in my account...play smaller tourneys (the $20 one instead of the $50 ones)

what can ya do :(

This does suk.
Does any one have suggestions as to using Fire Pay or Net Teller?

Some of the online casinos are offering up to a 20% chip bonus with a new buy thru these companies, but what good is that if they are troublesome to use?

Any information will be greatly appreceiated?

Thanks.

FirePay takes three to five days to transfer funds to/from a U.S. checking account. It takes a few more days to set up an account since they verify with two small deposits less than 50 cents. Most credit card issuers treat deposits to FirePay as a gambling transaction and block transfers. FirePay does work, and should be preferred. I could not get Net Teller to function properly to set up an account with them, so I can't comment on their capabilities. It costs $30 to Western Union $100 to Costa Rica. Therefore a 30% deposit rebate of some form by the Poker sites when using traditional wire transfer is needed to remain competitive. Something like Paradise's 100 raked hands per $5 rebate should be extended to Western Union transfers. High hand and/or bad beat jackpots are not sufficient incentive to attract new customers. Nothing I can foresee will replace the convienence of quick and easy credit card transactions directly with a site. It seems to be up to the on-line poker industry to make it worth the effort for a new player by offsetting the inconvienence with direct cash comps for hands played. The best way I see is for simple daily comps directly into a players account at 1% of the rake for total hands they are dealt in. If I play hold'em for 8 hours and during that time the drop is $500, I would get $5 added to my account the next day. With a full ring game, that would cost the house 10% of the drop equitably distributed. This would be comparable to brick and mortar card room's typical comp for low limit play.

While firepay takes 3-5 days to setup it transfers funds instantanesouly through electronic checks. With regard to cashing out they send the money back to you through ETF. I forget how long this takes. Overall I have been quite pleased using firepay and do not bother with paypal because it takes time to deposit money into paypal whereas firepay does not.

I've been playing online for two years, and found the best way to fund accounts is to find a bank that will give you a checking account with no minumum balance and no service charge(US Bank, in my case).
I request a VISA debit card with NO CREDIT LINE. the Debit card works instantly with some sites, as there is no credit attached to it.

I did "jump through hoops" to register this account with Pay Pal, and completed the chore the day Ebay bought Paypal. Oh, well. I then registered with Neteller, and used it to get a deposit bonus for TruePoker.

Hopefully online banking will become the preferred method of payment for EVERYTHING in the near future!
