| Hi all, I have had quite a large amount of success in small tournaments. I have made plenty of final tables. The trouble is I have NEVER taken first prize. Basically my heads up play is awful. Does anyone have any tips, reading material on this subject? Thanks | ||

A few obvious tips, would be to expand your starting requirements dramatically, and raise more hands than you normally would. In a typical limit hold'em heads up match, I would go as far as to say that I'll see the flop OVER 90% of the time. If you are folding any marginal hands heads up, you are going to be at a huge mathematical disadvantage- for that reason alone. Some top limit hold'em players I know, will actually play 100% of the hands dealt heads-up. Against certain opponents I would do the same, but against tough opposition I'll throw away my very worst hands. The best way to practise your heads up/short handed tournament skills, would be to play in short handed or heads up cash games. That way, when you are faced with the task of playing late in the tournament, you'll be prepared to make the necessary adjustments. Daniel Negreanu kidpoker@hotmail.com

| Thanks very much Daniel - one thing though, I live in the UK where limit is a dirty word, all of my tournament experience has been at Pot limit and no limit. Would you make the same recommendations for big bet poker tourneys? | ||

Would you make the same > recommendations for big bet poker tourneys? Well I'm glad you pointed that out, as my response to your question was assuming that you were referring to limit poker. For no limit, it's a diffenrent ball of wax entirely. I adapt a '5 gear strategy' when playing no limit: 1. Against extremely weak players who are happy to see flops (Don't raise, just steal it from them later when you miss) 2. Against players who will call raises, but NEVER ,make bluff raises post flop. (Make small raises, and take the pot when they miss) 3. Against players who raise frequently pre-flop, but will fold to a re-raise pre-flop. (re-raise them with more hands than you normally would) 4. Against 'Move in' players that adapt an all in or nothijng approach... and finally. (trap the s--- out of them! DO some limping with big hands, and also make some small raises hopijg to get re-raised by a worse hand. 5. The toughest of the bunch, the chamelion who contiunuasly changes his stripes, hand after hand. (sorry, no good adivce here. The description describes a TOUGH player. Unfortunately, there is no easy 'game plan' to beat one of these guys. Just pay attention, STAY focused, and fight the good fight!) Daniel Negreanu kidpoker@hotmail.com

But, there would be a lot more at stake than the $500. :-) Problem is, you're still occasionally in your young-warrior mode, and you might make a bigger deal of it if you win than I would if I win. Me, I've been through that necessary stage already, and if I win, I'm just going to say that Daniel got bad cards and a short match doesn't prove anything. Then, I'm going to say all kinds of nice things about you're talent (things that deserve to be said about you, BTW). So, it seems to me that -- on balance -- I take the worst of this kind of ego bet. But if you really want to, maybe we will some day. And I'll me cheering for you as much as I will be for myself, because I'm weird and I don't take sides and it's all poker. | it is great to see people i've heard or read about. (or read thier articles) I specifically look for daniel's or mike's posts first. i like reading for free what card player mag. pays $$ per word. (well dont stop doing it now that i pointed it out) It aggitates me to no end to see some nobody rip apart people like Mike at "the other forum" like they've ever done anything in thier lives that would make thier words interesting. keep posting, you guys are giving me a semi-living over here and i've only been playing a year especially for mike's tells, and danny's trilogy about the girl that broke him, that i pointed out to my g/f was helpful too. Keep it coming guys regardless what some nobody says.

| The best advise I have read was that at heads up position, is to play the player not the cards. For at that time only your experience tell you what he might be playing. Concider the other player as the big blind, you both have 2 random hands dealt to you. | ||

| one of the good things the 2+2 forums did was hold an annual heads-up online tourney on Pokerstars. Limit play...could take up to two hours to get dangerous blinds (unless you suck real bad) - That was the best experience I ever got...if you can get that... or play money heads up experience like on PS, then you're in business. Generally, heads up, you're a fav with anything Q5 offsuit or better. I like to run sims on hands using poker calculator software. you're going to have to learn to read your opponents, of course, but this will help a lot learning how to do it. Peace RB | ||
