I recently read an article in card player magazine, written by Tom McEvoy, that told of a hand played between Noel Furlong and Johnny Chan in a no-limit hold'em tournament. Noel raised something like $30,000 from the big blind with pocket fours and Chan re-raised $100,000 with pocket queens. Noel called and the flop came down K-X-X. Noel moved all in and to his surprise Chan called. How does someone develop these "reading" powers? I have read all of Caro's books, which have been extremly profitable, but I don't think that many good players will be showing a lot of these tells and all though I wasn't at the table I don't think after Noel moved all in he stared Chan down showing weakness. Are there any other good books on these "reading" skills?

Vincent ,

I asked myself the same question as you did. I noticed you said you read all of Mike’s books. Did you happen to get the Video tapes that he has on tells? I read the Tells book also, but the tape's really helped me get more out of it. Seeing is believing I guess. Worth the price and much more. But i am with you would love to hear if there is anything else out there i can read or watch.

Good Luck
Louied

Now you are in the Hosh's area. Reads are developed by watching people very close recording in your mind every movement when you are out of the hand. First take a look their bet how did it come off. Was it confident was it weak. Relate that to the final hand. Did he fumble chips. Is he shuffling his chips how well. Relate that to the shown down hand. Next look at his face does he smile or is it a forced smile. Now the blink rate. Is it fast is he excited what could cause the excitement. Does he jerk when he gets a good flop. I mean head jerk. Or muscle jerk. Oh yah for those people wearing Sunglasses How do you read them. Watch there breathing rate. deep means a hand. How about their finger nails. The skin under the finger nail is like a mirror. Dark red for a good hand and whiter for a bluff. Watch for a baseline when they are not in a hand. Blood rushes to the heart when they have a bad hand giving them a whitish fingernail. Now look at the guys scalp see the pores at the top of the scalp and the hair. You will see oil produced when excited causing the pores to give off a shine. Thats because they are bluffing. I call it look at that guy sweat syndrom. Hair will also stand more upright noticible in only the amatuers. Did he look at his chips (a quick peak). He is going to bet or check raise. Can he speak when he is on a bluff ask him a question see his response or does his response make no sense. Watch if he settles in his chair waiting for action. Tthis is what we call tension waiting. He is tensing up for some type of battle probably because he has a good hand or big draw. I am sure I missed a few but. I am sure this will be enough to get you started. Sorry Mike I did not want to step on your toes (: but i did not want to include the ones in your book. Oh by the way buy Mike Caro's Book Of Tells somewhere. It will help you a lot I still remember when I first got the book. I studied every picture and tried to memorize it. There is excellent information on the net on Lie Detection and nervous system responses such as autonomic nervous system. The color nail detection and breathing are based on these. Play well an have fun Hosh!!!!!
