| I'm a beginning poker player who is currently taking his lumps, but getting better. Playing mostly online, my first $100 buy-in at 1-2 and 2-4 HE went quickly (some three months ago). My second $100 buy-in (last month) was built up to $300 before I crashed and burned. That $$$ lasted me about 2 weeks. I entered 3-4 tourneys, finishing second in one (top four paid). This is all done at TruePoker.com. In between buy-ins, I read everything I can on HE. The time off between buy-ins was probably the best thing I'd ever done -- gave me a chance to read Jones' book and delve into other sites (Card Player, UPF, etc.) and learn more about the game. And I'll give myself time off from the game before buying in again, although I will continue to play with fake money. I feel confident in my pre-flop and flop play -- I don't play trash and when I have something good, I play it fast. I'm guilty of playing marginal hands (A8s, K10o for example) once in a while, but I call it variance in my play. My weaknesses are in how I play the turn and river with hands that are likely second-best. Once in a while, these hands will win, but mostly, they fail. Often, I find myself holding second-best in a game filled with people who routinely play trash and calling them to the river, thinking they have junk and I've got the strongest hand. I'm right on in that assessment --- they do have junk --- but they make their hands on the river. I've played blackjack for a long time and mastered what needs to be known, simply because BJ is a very cut-and-dried game (Always hit S17, never split 10s, always split aces and 8s, never take insurance, etc.). Are there any such "commandments" for beginning poker players? How do I go about improving my play on the turn and the river? Do I play at a good site, or am I better served by going elsewhere (online only -- personal matters make playing live almost impossible)? Thanks in advance | ||

| I think the best thing you can do is to post specific hands that are giving you problems. Having guys like Roy and Mike comment on your play is invaluable. I also think it's great that they both have been taking the time to personally respond as much as they can. I also think beating a $1-$2 game with a $3 rake would be a tough feat for even an accomplished player. So I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. | ||

| There is definitely a clear-cut ten commandments for poker just like in BJ. Every HE poker beginner knows that as a rule the key to winning is HIGH cards. Under the gun, play ONLY a pair of tens or higher, AK AQ KQ and AJ. Everything else is garbage. As you move on to middle and late position, you can play pair of sevens through nines and middle suited connectors as well as A10 KJ QJ K10 and Q10. REMEMBER: never play small suited connectors. You might get lucky but overall they areloosers. You must have the discipline to fold that 67o and then feel happy about it even after you see the flop 458, knowing that you made the correct decision to fold. The other two elements in HE which are not etched in stone are knowing how to adjust your play to different opponents and how to maximize your positional advantage. The same AJ could be a solid folding hand against a raise by player A, while it would be a reraising hand by player B. A pair of threes is almost useless in early position, but if you think there's a good chance you can steal the blinds, it is definitely correct to raise in late position. | ||

| I have to disagree with jajo's comment about hard and fast rules, there aren't any. There are very strict guidlines which Jones, Caro, Kreiger, etc have explained. But everything is situationally dependant and varying your play to look bad or loose in certain situations is acceptable and even profitable. Having said that, at the $1-2 level, only play strong cards and don't worry about varying your play for image, no one will notice. Mark | ||

| One concept that is so important and that might be obvious to most people is that "loosing is part of the game". You will sometimes loose with pocket aces to 2,7 off suite. You will sometimes loose when you have the nut flush. You will sometimes go on for hours and maybe even weeks without getting anything and when you do get something you get river. The important thing is that you have to know is that if you played well consistently you will win more than you loose, and in the long run you will profit. It had to take 3 of the best poker players in my city to drill this concept into me. But now i understand it my game have improved. Richard | ||

| My suggestion for any new player is to get Roy's Book. You have bought books and have done your homework. Now you have to learn logic of situations. Poker is an investment game. Cost Chance Payback are the keys to you winning. What does is cost me to continue what is the chance i can win the pot and what is the payback if I win the pot. Roy's book is the only book that does this. My suggestion if you play on line is also to get a good tracking program for the opponents. This will be used as a guide since you cannot see opponents and pick up tells. You must know how often they defend their blinds. How often they check raise and probable hands for the situation. Play well and have fun!!!! Hosh | ||

| Lucky Gal at TruePoker says hi! You have looked at the stats to see what type of game you are playing for loose passive, etc, I am sure, and True has good stats, in fact they have much looser games than many sites, but that will mean you get rivered more too! When 6 people see the river, you have to have the best hand! However, playing some of the promotions can stretch your bankroll. I run a pokerplayers' website at www.pokerscene.com and am happy to discuss anything with you regarding any of the dozen or so sites I know, and since many of the smaller sites are virtual clones of the larger ones, that translates to even more that are familiar. Check out some of the promotions, and don't hesitate to ask questions as there are many areas that are not online yet. Support our efforts to get your bankroll to play at any site you want, without the delay of transferring it in and out and waiting days for it to get to the game you want! Smile and say Hi at the tables to LuckyOne, LuckyWon, LuckyToo, ScoopHL or LuckyGal | ||
