Adjusting to a 1/2 kill, Kevin J, 28. Oct 2002 09:11 | ||

| I'm really at a loss for how much I should tighten up when possessing the leg-up button in a 1/2 kill game. The way it works is that after you win a pot you receive the "leg-up" button. IF you win this next pot, the following hand is played at 1.5 times the limit and you are required to post a 1/2 kill which is 1 small bet of the increased limit. So in a 10-20 game with a 1/2 kill you'd post $15. I tend to play REAL tight with the leg-up. Perhaps even throwing away a hand like AJo on the button when no one else has called. I figure that with the $5 rake PLUS the $15 kill, it's costing me close to $20 to play the hand. I realize it is actually less than $20, since I'll win a portion of the time I have to kill it... But it still seems to me that it's pretty expensive to play anything but a premium hand. I guess what I need to figure out is how much does a kill really cost? It should be less than a random big blind hand because you'll at least have position some of the times. But say you figure a hand has a + $10 expectation (before rake) can it be worth playing if you'll have to post $15 on the next hand? Ironically, I tend to LOOSEN up a little when playing in a killed pot against poor players. I figure my implied odds are now a little better should I make a hand. I'd appreciate any advice on this. Thanks. | ||

| Is there no minimum pot size required for the kill or leg up? Worst case scenario. Say you stole the blinds on the button and again the next hand. Would you have to post $15 even though you only won $30? | ||

| There is no minimum pot size (just two pots in a row), but you have to win at least one small bet to kill it. For example, if you raised and picked up the blinds, you would receive the leg-up button. Now if you raised and won the blinds again, you just retain the leg up, since you did not win a bet. However, if one of the blinds were to call your pre-flop raise and you won (even if he did not call your bet on the flop), then you'd have to kill it by posting $15 ($30 in a 20-40 game). | ||

| If you're holding the kill button in late position you should play more aggressively than normal. The blinds have to pay proportionately more to call. If no one calls in front, you will have to treat the $15 on the kill button as if it were a late position post and go for a steal with just about anything. You should also take a raise from late or middle position with weaker cards in situations where you might be able to isolate an early position limp. From early position with a premium hand you can be more inclined to check with the intention of reraising. Overall, once you already have the kill button it is important not to play tighter than normal. This is because you already have a forced $15 investment deferred from your winnings on the previous hand. You can and should make the raise more often to try to protect that kill. Usually raise with better hands which you would ordinarily overcall with before the flop. The exception would be when you are also in one of the blind positions. Since it's a disadvantage to have to post the kill, the time to play tighter is when you have just won a pot and have a leg up. You don't want the kill, so limit your play to just the early position premium hands even if you are on the button. | ||
