$15-$30 Shorthanded Hand, Dan Chio, 26. Oct 2002 15:37

Playing in a four to sixhanded short handed $15-$30 game today at the cardroom. Some hands went my way, some didn't, but I was curious about my play on this particular hand. There were no real fishes at the table. Fairly aggressive, typical shorthanded play. I had been playing very aggressively at the start of the session.

We are four handed and I pick up KK UTG, I pop it to 30 and everyone calls. Flop comes 8 4 4 w/ two clubs. Blinds check, I bet, Button calls, SB folds and BB calls. Turn is T of hearts, putting two hearts out there as well. BB checks, I check, and Button bets. BB calls. I am pretty sure BB has a 4, but don't follow my instincts and make a call. River is an offsuit rag. BB bets out. I call. Button calls. BB takes it down with 54o. Button said he had a T with a decent kicker. Is there anyway I should lay down my KK here? Once I called the turn, I was calling the river.

Thanks,
Dan

I think you might be able to get off your big pair if you bet and get check/raised (and then only if you know your opponent(s) well). But so far, nothing has occurred to make you think you're against a bettter hand. In fact, I think it's concerning that you're even considering check/folding this hand on the turn.

Hi Dan

If you are pretty sure he has a 4 you should fold......Are your instincts good? You have to devolop good instincts, trust your instincts and act on them!

Roy, I don't have near your exp, but 4-6 handed is my B&B and I would never laydown KK in this situation, although I would've slowed down once raised on the turn. Usually.

If a guy on my right tosses his big pairs when I raise him on the turn after picking up a flush draw 4-6 hnded, I'll send him home wearin' a barrel.

If someone's instincts are good enough to correctly fold big pairs 4 handed w/no overcard or three str/flsh on board, they should be playing a lot higher than 15-30, IMO.

You have the same problem as "Soh" who posted above (well, sort of). You should have bet the turn. When you put yourself in a check-call mode in these situations, you are left in a quandary as to what to do when someone else decides to bet. If you bet and get raised, this will tell you a lot more about where you stand than when you simply check-call and pay out at the river. Guys will frequently make semibluff bets on fourth in a shorthanded pot but are less likely to make semibluff raises, at least at the $15-$30 level. But I do agree that so much of how you play in shorthanded games is dependent upon your read of the players and the situation.

Well, actually, the first hand I saw at the table when I took a seat, was the BB check-raising the turn on only a heart draw. I made myself think he was on either one of the flush draws or a straight draw, which was costly. I saw him look over at me as he pondered calling on the turn. I, in turn, grabbed six chips and gave the impression I was definitely going to call and then he just called. I thought he was putting a move on me, but I should have just followed my original read. When he bet out on the river, it could have been a busted draw and didn't feel I could muck on river after my call on turn. Interestingly, the button said he knew I had his tens beat, yet he also made a crying call on the river.
