ANALYSIS - POCKET 4'S, SBVette, 22. Oct 2002 07:56

| 3/6 game, Kinda loose I'm two behind the button and am dealt 4s 4d. Six callers. Flop come up Kc7c4c. I'm am thinking "oh great", get the set and am an underdog to the Flush. BB bets out and we lose one for a total three callers. The turn is 8c. Now I'm thinking this is not good!! BB bets out we lose one more, I call and two more callers (total 4). I'm thinking thinking too myself that I've got to get a K, 4, 8, or 7 for the boat and I can squash those single Club holders. To my surprise, I get the 7d. WooHoo.... I got a boat. BB bets, middle guy calls, and I raise. BB Calls, calls. I flip over my row boat and the BB shows Ks, 7h for a bigger Full House. I'm like great!! So I lost. No big deal right. But all night I was thinking how I could of played that hand differently. So here is the questions. 1. Should I raise raise preflop (assuming that all players are keeping top cards)? 2. Should I raise the flop to 6 or fold? 3. Should I have raised the turn to 12 or fold? 4. Should I have folded the flop or turn? 5. Should I have just called the River Card rather than raise. Thank you | ||

| I know a lot of people like to wait for the turn (a blank) before putting in a raise, but I favor the play of raising immediately here. Even if someone has flopped a flush (certainly possible, but unlikely), you have enough outs to where this raise figures to earn money when everyone calls. If the bb has a king, he might re-raise and put pressure on some of the lower singleton clubs. This might save you the pot if and when a 4th club arrives. Under-fulls are often vulnerable and it was just unfortunate that you wound up losing to a bigger house. IMO- Good luck | ||

Should I raise raise preflop (assuming that all players are keeping top > cards)? Roy: I would not! This is generally the type of hand in which I want to get in cheaply to keep my implied odds as high as possible. The exception to this would be if I thought a raise might induce players that would otherwise bet to check to me on the flop and therefore give me a free card on the flop if I missed. > > 2. Should I raise the flop to 6 or fold? Roy: I probably would have raised. The hand may be good and even if it isn't I am still 33% to make a full. I would probably not raise if I was certain I was beat. > > 3. Should I have raised the turn to 12 or fold? Roy: I would raise the turn if I would be likely to win the pot if the Ace of clubs was not out. If I would get called by a smaller club then I would not raise the turn. > > 4. Should I have folded the flop or turn? Roy: NO..the pot was too big and the price was correct to draw even if you knew a club flush was out! > > 5. Should I have just called the River Card rather than raise. Roy:I think your raise was correct....the only way I could not raise that bet is if my opponent was so tight that he would ONLY bet a full-houose in that spot! > > Thank you

| I would not raise preflop. With baby pocket pairs, you want to get in cheaply and raising allows someone the chance to 3-bet making it even more expensive to take flop. I don't like raising the flop bet despite having a large field and being only about a 2-to-1 dog to fill up by the river. The problem with raising is that someone who has a flush, especially the nut-flush, may well 3-bet and drive players out. I don't want players out in this situation. On the turn, I definitely would not raise. Again, someone with the Ac knows they have the nuts and they will 3-bet thereby driving players out and making it more expensive for me to pursue my draw. Folding having 10 outs to fill would be insane. You cannot ever fold this hand on the flop or the turn. Yes, you should raise with your full house. It is tough to lose in these situations but there was nothing to be done. That is why they call this gambling. | ||

| I believe that you should have prefloped raised and assume that everyone is holding overcards or pocket pairs, so that if you were reraised, during betting after the flop, you might figure them to have floped a higher set before your bank roll took any more abuse. In my experences at the 10 20 limits this has helped me to become a winning holdem player, however, 3/6 is more a lottery game than anything else. I dont take this game serious at all and I know your raise would only entice me to play and therfore force you to put your game to the test. I raise any pocket pairs in late possition just to assure that I can get the bb to toss his cards and my aggressive tactics come into play usually making me the winner more times than the loser. | ||

| I would have raised the flop and made in expensive for single clubs. I think you can call one bet on the turn and your raise on the river is right. | ||

| Do any of the hand analysis software packages handle what if scenarios like you are raising? Just curious. | ||
