Bet or Check the Turn?, Kevin J, 21. Oct 2002 21:16

I thought I might get some additional insight from regular posters here.

I limped in 2nd with KQo. 4 others limped. 7-way.

The flop came QT8r. Checked to me and I bet. 4 players called.

The turn was a jack making a flush draw possible, but now giving me top pair with an open ender.

Would anyone bet?

Hi Kevin

Yes...I would bet! I don't want to give a free card if my hand is good and I am calling anyway! If I bet and get raised....chances are my opponent has defined his hand and I may not have to pay of the river. Additional value from betting comes if I make my hand and it adds deception to my play.

Wow, am I glad to hear you say that! I thought this was an interesting decision. At least one that caused me to think some.

I did bet and unfortunately it got raised. Two people called $80 cold and I called realizing at least one (possibly more) of my nines were tied up. The river blanked and I checked. There was a bet and two callers. I folded. Two people had a nine for a str8 (3rd player must've had two pair?).

A friend (who is currently struggling at the 10-20 level) happened to be standing behind me and sweated this hand. Afterwards, he asked me if I thought I played it well. I told him I thought so. I'd bet that turn 100% of the time. But he questioned whether I had needlessly cost myself extra money by betting into so many players with a 4 card straight on board.

He made some valid points. On a QT8 board, there just aren't too many legitimate hands that could've called my flop bet and still leave me ahead after the jack arrives. So is a free card so terrible if I'm the one who needs it?

I know this sounds silly, but a big part of the reason I bet on the turn, is because I absolutely wanted to get to the river with my hand. In addition to top pair/good kicker, I had a big up and down straight draw. At least 3 aces gives me the stones in what was now becoming a big pot. What would I do if I checked and it got bet and raised back to me? Since I might now be faced with multiple bets, I'd probably have to fold, right? So checking could leave me with a very tough decision. On the other hand, I can easily shrug off a single raise (after I bet). Also, my opponents can't rule out my having 99 or even A9s. This might ease any aggression back to me after I bet. So is this a silly reason to bet?

Anyway, I thought it was an interesting hand. Thanks for your response Roy.
