Unimaginative player?, Paul Arnold, 19. Oct 2002 01:44

In an Aug. Cardplayer article Roy Cooke refered to one of the players in his example as "unimaginative." His reference to that type of player has bothered me now for some time. I have recently made the moved up from 3-6 and 6-12 Hold'em to 15-30 Hold'em as my main game. I'm still building my bankrole so I tend to play tight and I guess unimaginatively. I'm not doing too bad, but feel I should do better. However, whenever, I pre flop raise with a big pair and loose to an 8-7 two pair or little straight I have to wonder if I'm too readable, because I have become unimaginative.
Any thoughts?

I think an "unimaginative player" is one who plays in very predictable ways. He always has a hand when he bets or raises. He does not make semi-bluff bets or raises. He doesn't bluff on the end. Players like this frequently do well in low limit games where the players are playing their cards and not much else. In middle and higher limit games, a player like this will struggle to break-even and might even be a small loser.

Hi Paul

If you are getting your raises called by 87 offsuit then you do not have a problem in being readable. Even if your opponents are reading you they are not acting on that knowledge. It is only imprortant to make deceptive plays if your players are of the quality to read hands effectively AND act on those reads!

Players that play ABC in high limits against experienced great cardreaders with good play knowledge get slaughtered! You are not in that element!

Not unimaginative. Just unlucky. :)

People might be playing "snap-off" against you, too, to set you on tilt. This is a GOOD THING...if you don't get on tilt. I know that people do it to me. It hurts to be unlucky, but if you don't let it get to you, it won't matter in the long run.

For deceptive play to be valuable, your opponents have to notice it. In all likelihood, the small games you are playing in are not populated by players who would know what unimaginitive is or not... they aren't paying attention.

In most low-limit little-skilled games it is the "unimaginitve" players who take down the money.

Not so at higher limits...
