A major NL tourney Blunder! or was it?, Hatchet Harry, 14. Oct 2002 10:11

The tourney is an online NL Holdem with 120 entrants!
I'm sittin in 12th position with about 6500 chips with 30 players left about 1.5 hrs into the tourney. The player to my left is well known to me and is an extremely good player and finishes in the Money more times than not he is chip leader with about 22K in chips and but has been on a rush for about the last 20 minutes and has showed down hands like 10-3 suited which had made 2 pair on the flop.
It's folded to me and i'm 3 off the button with Kc 6c. I've been playin tight aggresive game up to now and most of my raises have been respected.
Blinds are 100-200 and i raise it to 750. The player to my left calls my raise and the blinds fold.
The flop comes T-6-2 all spades.
Becuase of his varied play it was nearly impossible to put him on a hand as I knew that he'd be happy to bet most things from late position.
As I had been playin tight up to now I thought that a semi bluff would be worth a try and bet 1000.
Player to my left cold calls again, and i put him on trips or the flush (But not the nuts as I beleive that he would have re-raised before the flop.)
Turn is 4s.
I tried to put myself in the players shoes and figured that it was possible that he had me on top pair or AK.
So representing the Ace Spades I continued my bluff and raised all in. Got called immediately and he showed down As Qs.

So was this a tragic, undisciplined play or not.
Obviously it's difficult for me to see it any other way in retrospect but i've been thinking about it, and I still beleive that if he had'nt held the A he would've folded.
If I need to get a kick up the jacksy for making this play then please feel free to make it a good one.

Cheers
Harry

I think you should have asked yourself the question "am I willing to risk first place money on this bluff?" ....

1.st, It's quite likely that the other play can have a spade heads up, if you don't.
2nd, he has so many tournement chips, your assumption that he would fold with anything less than As, in my opionion is wrong. He would probably only fold if he didn't have a spade at all.

K/6 has very little expectation, unless you were stealing blinds, I wouldn't play it, wait a bit for better hands, since you have the big stack behind you. Your big raises don't seem as big to him, especially when its heads up, anything can happen.

I would say that avoiding the situation in the first place is the best course of action, why bother even putting yourself in such a spot ?

Secondly i would also say that after you raised the flop and he flat calls that is the time to realise you are beat and get out with put losing any more chips The fourth spade falling and he is still calling you means that is he pretty darn sure to call the final bet you make.

>I've been playin tight aggresive game up to now and most of my raises have been respected.

I would say that the reason you have been repsected etc in the past i that you werent playing hands as dodgy as K6s.

Saying all of that i have made decisons like yours and done the same sort of thing and it is only after with fantastic hindsight that you can say 'hang on a second' that was a debatable play,i guess the key is to keep learning from your mistakes !

Poker's for jokers ha ha ha.

Hi Harry,
You are a smart guy (inferred from your previous posts), therefore I guess that you were tilted by the opponents previous play.

Cheers

There are a lot of things that I could say right now but I'm not.
