Holdem V's Omaha, Hatchet Harry, 13. Oct 2002 10:02

I love my holdem, and as far as i'm concerned i would be happy to play just that for the rest of my poker playing life, however would learning omaha give me any benefits in my Holdem game?
I think there is so much to master in Holdem alone, I don't feel I can justify using the time that I could be studying holdem to master another form of the game.
Any thoughts?

Cheers
Harry

I sort of posted this without really thinking it through properly. I would assume that all you need to do to learn a game so similar to Holdem is to learn the fundementals! (IE starting hand req. ETC). I would guess that all other parts of the game would then employ similar strategy and thinking. If this is correct then i think i'll wait a year or so until i've got all the holdem fundementals down before venturing into other game types.
Maybe i've answered my own question, if not i would be glad to hear views.

Cheers
Harry.

I mainly agree with Mr. Cooke. If you are very new to poker, then it is best to concentrate on one game.

The "traditional" argument for learning other forms is that it increases your game selection. If the HE game looks bad, or isn't going, but there's a rocking Omaha or Stud, then you can still play, and earn, that day instead of going home.

If you're honest with yourself, you will soon realize that you will NEVER master any one game completely. So, if you wait to pick up Omaha after you've MASTERED HE, you may be waiting a while. You may find that learning new games revitalizes your interest in poker in general.

I don't think that learning Omaha will necessarily improve your HE game. The games share superficial similarities, but are rather different. However, learning different forms of poker may, as you suggest, broaden your understanding of poker in general, and will hopefully strengthen all of your games.

Hi Harry

Since you are new to poker I would concentrate on one game first...master it and then go on to other games. Omaha is a different animal to hold'em and I think it would stagnate your growth in hold'em if you put effort into it that you could put into mastering hold'em.

I agree with Roy ..Yet I dont think it would be wrong to dabble in omaha at the lower limits and see how the game suits you..
each individual has a particular nack for that one specific game..
So get out and dabble..
Yes harry poker thoery is universal to all forms so in omaha learning starting requirements would go far in your mastering the game asuming we`re talking limit omaha...
Starting requirements for pot limit are slightly modified...
