| Hi. Bellagio $30-$60. A live pklayer is straddling,. but is getting annoyed no one else is. He offers me $10 if I will straddle next hand. I take it. Question: Whatis the right price I should take to make it worth my while to put a live $60 on it? 10? 5? $20? hat do you think? | ||

| My guess is between $5-$10. Over on the 2+2 forum, David Sklansky posed a related question when he asked: "If you are in a 10-handed $30-$60 game and you have a player in the big blind who will call all raises and play any pair or any draw all the way to the river, what would you do with hands like 2-2, 7-5 suited, and J-T offsuit?" (My paraphrase based on my memory). His answer, which no one agreed with, was that you should play all these hands. David asked me a question: "In a 10-handed $30-$60 game, how much would I have to pay you to limp in under-the-gun with Q-T offsuit?" HIs answer was no more than $5. | ||

| Hi Barry It depends :-)! Will this promote the straddler to keep on staddling for the rest of the night where if you don't he won't! In that case I think it is a BIG overlay. If you are just disscussiong the trial that is current, then it would depend on the level in which you can outplay your opponents! If they are tough aggressive players i think it would lean more toward the $20 mark...If they play passive bad then I would not think you are giving up too much. I would like to point out that I have been starting small games at PlanetPoker and have played EVERY (litterally) hand and have had two winning months out of three! The ability to gain edge in play of hands is a huge edge and the basis for my hand selection! Roy Cooke on 9. Oct 2002 20:39 Barry T wrote: > Hi. Bellagio $30-$60. Seriously though, this sounds like a 'fun' 'action' type of guy, and whatever he wants to do, y'all should humour him. By taking his offer you are doing so many great things for the game: A) You are letting him, and the rest of the table know that you are no stiff rock B) You are promoting others to also straddle, and gamble up'. C) You are making the tourist (most likely) happy. Do you need another reason? D) If he is enjoying himself, and others are entertaining him, he'll likely stay longer. I could go on and on, but I think the point is clear. If you are 'working' a game, you should take a lesson from Greg Dinkin's book, and call it a 'business expenes'. I would go as far as to say this: If he straddles, and asks you to do the same, just laugh it up and do it. If you lose, you can jokingly blame him for your loss. The next time it's your turn to straddle, just say,"I have to change my luck, it didn't work last time". Bottom line, don't be such a nit! :-) P.S. To answer your ACTUAL question, I would think (and I could be way off here), that you would need $20-$25 from him to make the play break even. | Daniel: I really enjoyed your post and your point. At some level, keeping the live tourist happy and having fun (an d playing) is worth way more than the expectation I lose by straddling. I am glad I did it. This was a great guy who was having a great time. He laughed when he won, he laughed when he lost, and he splashed chips like crazy. Of course, variance goes through the rooof, but there money to be made. (I made $1800 in five hours before he packed up to go "win it back at baccarrat.") Keeping him entertained has a value all its own. BarryT | ||

| I don't like straddling, and I never used to do it. However, I've loosened up recently. I think the answer to your question is this: How much is this player worth to the game? If he's an excellent player who's just trying to change the character of the table to his advantage, I would say no amount of money is worth straddling. If he's an "action player" who believes any two will do, and is bored and eyeing other tables, I say give him his $10 back, and straddle once or twice. Start trying to make the game feel like the party he wishes he were at, and maybe he'll start throwing confetti. Jeff | ||
