Help me put a name to this game, Goet, 7. Oct 2002 17:04

I've played this for years, but don't know the name. My family always called it Paiute (not sure if it has anything to do with the indians) *shrug*. Anyway, this is a fun poker-like game.

5 cards dealt to each player.
ONLY 5 possible hands can be played, poker style. Cards may be played after picking up or the hand (depends on hand played) played with last card being discarded. Jokers are decided beforehand, either using the existing jokers or having the top card turned over and the opposite color being used as a joker. Eg.: dealer deals all 5 cards and then flips over the 9 of clubs and places it in the discard pile. This means that red nines are jokers.

These are the hands, from lowest to highest.

1. 3 pairs. Eg. 4,4; K,K; 10,10
2. 2 3 of a kind Eg. 7,7,7; Q,Q,Q
3. 4 deuce. 4 of a kind and a pair Eg. 5,5,5,5; A,A
4. Straight, 5 cards, same suit.
5. Five of a kind, using a joker(s).

Play follows to the left with the player having the option to draw from the top discard or from the pile.

Usually the first hand of 3 pairs can only be played on "first knock" or the first round.

We get together as family and play with nickels and up. The winner with hand #1 gets 5 cents from everyone else. Hand #1 gets a dime. Hand #5 gets a quarter.

Does anyone play this in any kind of variation? What do you call it?

I don't check these forums regularly and would really appreciate an email if you have the answer to this. I can be reached at auresh@hotmail.com

Thank you
