| I am a fairly recent "winning" low-limit hold'em player. I'm now able to read many of my opponents and my play is pretty solid. However, I lost $150 during my last $5-10 session. I did everything right I could think of. Before I even sat down I got talking to this guy who was stinking drunk, and ended up sitting down on his immediate left. He played every hand and at least called down to the river, but generally raised the whole way there. Most of the table got upset at him cause he kept getting lucky, but I just sat back waiting for hands to pick him off with. Unfortunately, I never had one. I only had about 5 winning hands (that I remember) during the entire 6 hour session and none were big. I stole two small pots and had a nut flush which didn't pay off. I could read 4 of the other players at the table, but didn't get playable hands, when they had nothing I had worse, when I had top pair, they had better. I didn't throw my money away, it was a long slow process. So, I felt like I played my regular winning game but came up short, does everyone go through this? Does everyone have losing sessions? In a situation like this , where I have position on a very loose bad player, should I have stayed longer and bought in again? I know I could beat the game if I mediocre cards, but I only saw rags that whole session. | ||

Pro players do that ALL the time! > > I did everything right I could think of. Yup...I hate when that happens :-)...but it does happen...it's part of poker! > > I could read 4 of the other players at the table, but didn't get playable > hands, when they had nothing I had worse, when I had top pair, they had better. > I didn't throw my money away, it was a long slow process. Sounds like you stayed disaplined and played well through a bad run.....give yourself a pat on the back for that....many of your opponets would have gone on tilt! > > So, I felt like I played my regular winning game but came up short, does > everyone go through this? Does everyone have losing sessions? Yup....I hate when that happens too! Not only does everyone have losing seesions...great players playing poor players have losing months! > > In a situation like this , where I have position on a very loose bad player, > should I have stayed longer and bought in again? Yes...you should have stayed longer as long as your were mentally and emotionally capable of playing well (sounds like you were). I do NOT make decisions on leaving based on my financial situation or how lucky I am running. I do make those decsions based on how I feel and how good the game is. I will sometimes make decisions based on financial situations if I think it will affect me psychologically. Roy Cooke | ||

| Thanks Roy Its good to hear that everyone goes through these things. When I left from that session I got pretty down on myself for not coming out ahead, when I felt like I was one of the better players. I did learn a couple of things from that session, and picked up a few tells on regulars, so it wasn't all bad. Thanks again, its great to be able to talk with professionals. Mark | ||
