Taking winners only to showdown, Jaxen, 30. Sep 2002 15:33

Thanks to Planet Poker and recent tournament experiences, poker play has gone from a hobby to a passion for me ... I realized recently about a playing habit I've developed. I find that if I take a hand to showdown in any game I play that I expect to win and am dissapointed if I don't. After all, why am I making that final bet if there's a chance I will lose, right? I characterize myself as a fairly tight player, though I will occassionally pay to see a flop with a marginal pocket.

I'm interested in this "win or else" attitude at the end. How normal is this?

When I decide to be a rock in various situations, I just play very aggressively to go with it. Proper playing style depends on your opponents too. I think being as tight as you say you are in a game with very loose opponents would not be optimal and you should consider loosening up. ..Unless your opponents are also being wild bettors, in which case you should remain tight and hit big when you've got the cards, give nothing up in the mean time.

For me, anyway, my playing style depends on my opponents' playing styles.
Hope this helps.

Best Regards,
Manley

Hi Jaxson

I think it is a normal attitude and part of the human condition, although an attitude wrong for poker. If you only bet when you KNOW you are going to win you are losing value when you check the times you are PROBABLY going to win and get called!

If you only bet on the river when you think you have the best hand, eventually alert opponents will pick up on this tendency and only call or raise you with strong hands too. This will start costing you when you don't get paid off as much as others, as you will become known as a player who never bluffs. Sometimes you need to bet on the river with a busted hand to give a weak pair or a draw that didn't get there another chance to fold. You don't necessarily expect your hand to be any good, but you need to show them that you are willing to bet nothing so that you will collect more when you do have the goods. Make sure you turn your hand over when you are called, so everyone can see the bluff.

Your probably talking yourself out of a lot of pots. As the pot grows tighness can cost you... it is ok to have a tight play preflop and on the flop but as the pot grows so do your reasons for caling. Now if your a sophisticated player who has reads on the players and can tell when there is a overwelming chance your hand is worthless... especally a policy of folding to check raises on early betting rounds

But If you have any chance of winning w/ a decent hand like two pair you must call (especially w/ a big pot) Often the opponent will have the hand you fear ... but often enough players will have different hands...(I'm talking about hold'em) Let me give you a couple examples.

One hand I was playing in Eagle Pass Tx. The Pot was huge I had AJ (button)

I made Aces on the flop... 10KA now eagle pass is craaazzy (capped flop or something)... I bet ... turn is something like a 9 or a 5 I bet again cause of my draw... river is a J... giving me Aces and Jacks... after some consideration I decide to bet $10 becase the players are so loose (and I thought that player would have bet his queen... I didn't like it but... then A big check raise from the hispanic fellow :-O

I was %100% sure he had the Q and I was beat... I wanted to throw my hand away so badly... but ... being the pro that I am I finnaly made a weeping and crying my balls off call. Pot was like 280+... and I might not have called against a player I knew better... (I might have checked at the end in that case) combination plate (no offence) turns over KJ and that was the biggest call of my early poker career and it taught me a lot.

I remember that hand very well it was over a year and a half ago

One more hand: Paradise... I have QJs I guess I raise 2 off the button I get a call and a reraise from the button.

Flop QJ10 ... I bet, get raised and the button reraises... there are lots of players and I call hoping for my 4 outs... I'm pretty sure at this point that this lady has AK... turn is blank 7... I check she bets strong 2 other playes and me call

... river is a backdoor spade I get bet into from my right... pot odds are huge... I hate my hand... I know the player made the flush and I'm probably beat by AK straight and I needed the Q of J ....

I finnnnaly decide to call and the lady just calls behind me... first player (On my right) turns over K7s [QJ10 73] for a pair of sevens and openended straight draw... I turn my QsnJs ... the player I thought for sure had AK on the button turns over AA! I take down a very very hard pot... which was bluffed at the end by the player w/ the staight draw representing a backdoor flush... and I feared AK big wheel behind me.

"I took it down" Mike McD "I got up and walked to the cashier"... " I played w/ the best, and I won! (one hand lol)"

I'm out
